Hi

My 3 times great grandfather, Pieter Josephus Dominicus de SOMER, a shopkeeper, appears to have been in trouble with the authorities in 's-Hertogenbosch in May 1847.  This offence was: Inspection, calibration and patent infringement.  I have downloaded a few pages from the Brabant Historich Informatie Centrum website, but I am unable to actually understand what he was guilty of as a shopkeeper.  The access # is 24, and the inventory # is 21.  Roll # 31.

This is his first offence - but not his last.

Thank you . . . cmatt

Not a lot of information. I skipped the legalese, and kept the essential for you.

Date of court session: 18 May 1847
having in his shop a piece of iron weight and a piece of copper weight, not properly recalibrated, as established on 27 January 1847.
Penalty: a fine of 10 Guilders

Considerations made during the court session:
1. The accused did not show, so he was convicted by default (in absentia)
2. The violation was established by 2 police officers. On 27 January 1847, they noted that 2 weights were present at the defendant's home (1 iron and 1 copper) that were not provided with the required hallmark for the past year. The recalibration should have taken place before 1 August 1846.
3. The penalty for this violation is a fine of 10 guilders.
4. The defendant must also pay the legal costs, being 96.5 cents.

On 31 May 1847, this verdict was announced by a bailiff to Petrus de Somer and his wife Cornelia Maria van Hooydonk.
