Trying to find a Smith death, would appreciate some help please.
« on: Monday 21 April 25 13:11 BST (UK) »
This one has been bugging me for ages and because of the common nature of the Smith surname it makes research even more difficult.

I have Mary Ann Tabor born circa 1868 in Pinchbeck. She married George Parfery in 1903 but George sadly passed away 4 years later. I found her on the 1911 Census living at Chatteris. She married for a second time to George W Smith on 15.11.1919. They are living at Red Cow Drove in Littleport according to the 1921 Census. I found them living at Bells Drove in Welney on the 1939 Register. I have copies of all these records for future reference.

I am trying to locate a death for Mary Ann/Mary A Smith.

I have checked FreeBMD to see if there are any obvious candidates. I checked both Norfolk and Cambridgeshire options for Mary A Smith deaths after 1939 but there are too many options ( even by carrying out the reverse calculation using the listed death year and age to give me a birth year nearest to 1868 ).

Just wondering if anyone has access to details or information that could help me conclude this part of my family tree.

Many thanks in anticipation  ;)

Steve

Many thanks PacLac for your reply and for the details you have researched on my behalf.

I mentioned circa 1868 because the birth date given on the 1939 Register for Mary A Smith was given as 22nd September 1868. It may pay me to revisit some websites using 1871.

Many thanks again Steve

Thankyou for your reply jonwarrn but unfortunately I do not have Ancestry subscription. If I need any records printing or downloading I use the FindMyPast edition at the local library.

Possible death for George
March 1955 Ely 4a 357
Smith, George William

Yep, I had spotted that one too. I also wondered whether George W Smith aged 75, Sept quarter 1944 Downham 4b 273 might be an option as well. As I mentioned previously, far too many permutations, but I thought of this one because Welney appears to be in the Downham registration district.

Many thanks again
Steve

Electoral registers 1951, 1952, 1953 (qualifying dates in November of the previous year)
Isle of Ely, Littleport
Red Cow Drive
Smith, George
Smith, George W., Senr.
Smith, Mary A.

The names are in an alphabetical list, so I can't say exactly who is in any paricular house.
No more Mary A Smith after 1953.

1911 census, Red Cow Drove
Mary Ann Smith, Wife, 42, born Welney Norfolk

1921 census, Red Cow Drove
Mary Ann Smith, Wife, 52 years 2 months, born Welney Norfolk

Gorge Hannah, 81, father in law, is in the household in 1921

Son George W Smith is age 4 in 1911 and 14 in 1921, born Littleport Fen.
His birth
SMITH, GEORGE  WILLIAM
Mother's Maiden Surname: HANNAH
GRO Reference: 1907  M Quarter in ELY  Volume 03B  Page 475

Mary A Smith's date of birth in 1939 is 22 Sep 1868, the month doesn't match with the 52 years 2 months given in June 1921.

It does though match a possible birth reg for a M. A. Hannah
HANNAH, MARY  ANN
Mother's Maiden Surname: JAMES
GRO Reference: 1868  D Quarter in DOWNHAM UNION  Volume 04B  Page 353

Could this be her in 1871? Age 2, born Welney, Norfolk. Parents George and Jane

GRO Reference: 1868  D Quarter in DOWNHAM UNION  Volume 04B  Page 353

And in 1881, age 12, parents George and Sarah J.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q278-FWFY

Possible marriage of George William Smith and Mary Ann Hannah in Dec qtr 1887, Downham.

Are we sure the Mary Ann Smith in Red Cow Drove in 1921 and 1939 is a twice married Mary Ann Tabor from Pinchbeck? She looks more like the Mary Ann Hannah from Welney? :-\
