John Corner - Ceylon

Recently I was given information for John CORNER (1) with his military background listed but am not able to find the source. Information is as follows:
Born abt. 1756 in England
Was in the following army services - Leicester Militia 1777 to 1783; 51 Regiment foot 1784 to 1807; 3rd Ceylon Regiment 1807 to 1810.
Retired in Ceylon.
I don't know any details for marriage, children or death and I'm not sure if he is related.
The John Corner (2) in my family tree was born in 1803 (England), married 1841(Ceylon), died 1867 (Ceylon). This John was in the Ceylon Rifle Regiment though I don't have military details.

John Corner (1) could be the father or grandfather of John Corner (2) or not related at all. Does anyone have further information on the above and also how I can obtain military records in either England or Ceylon? I've googled and tried various ways but to no avail.

A John G Corner is reported to have died in Colombo on 1 June 1860.

There is a burial in 1814 Nottingham for a John Corner age 58, which might be the same man.
