Shalford Baptisms
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 16:57 BST (UK) »
I have two John Thorogood, b. Shalford, appear in 1851 Census:

SURNAME     FORENAME   BIRTH_YEAR  AGE  BIRTH_PLACE  FOLIO CENSUS_DISTRICT

THOROGOOD    JOHN         1801      50  SHALFORD ESS   501     BRT
THOROGOOD    JOHN         1801      50  SHALFORD ESS   415     CRS

Is it possible to examine the baptism, marriage registers and perhaps determine the two sets of parents, siblings?

This MAY assist in determination of 'my' John in Cressing.

Thanks   CP

I tried to do this look-up last week at Essex RO. The reference is D/P 113/1/3 fiche 1 of 1. The images are so faint (whoever completed the register seemed permanently loth to spend money on ink) that they are understandable only with a considerable investment of time which goes well beyond the ordinary look-up.
Fortunately a transcript* is available at Essex RO (ref T/R 214/1) and I looked at that. I think it was done in 1981. The spelling of the surname seems to alternate between 'THURGOOD' and 'THOROGOOD'.
According to the transcript, between 1790 and 1815 there were two baptisms of a John T...
1799 24 Feb John THURGOOD son of Thos and Fran born 13 Jan
1800 8 Jun John THURGOOD son of John and Ann born 4 May
I listed all the 28 Ts baptised between 1790 and 1815 and my hand-written list is available to you if you wish (it would save a lot of typing on my part).
I also looked at the marriages between 1819 and 1829 and there were 6 involving a  male THOROGOOD but they did not include any John. My list includes details of those.

* It looked as if it was very carefully and methodically done but obviously it it is not the primary source

Clincher,

I knew this was not going to be easy, and I much appreciate what you have done.

Looks like you have found the two baptisms, and it is now for me to try and sort them out.

I have John and Ann Thurgood baptizing other children at Cressing, so I have a starting point.

Your notes will probably be useful, I will send PM.

Many Thanks.   CP

Hi CP,

This may interest you if you intend following up the info Clincher provided:  Charlotte daug of Thomas & Frances Thurgood baptised 12 Nov 1797 at Finchingfield.  Not saying it is the same Thomas and Frances but could be, I don't think the Thomas and Frances name combination would be too common.

I found that entry in the Finchingfield PR fiche at the ERO a few years ago.  Although I only recorded that entry there may have been others, I may have simply recorded it to reminder me that there were Thurgoods in Finchingfield.  I didn't record it as relating to my line because my Thurgood/Thoroughgood line ends in 1762 when Sarah Thurgood married Joseph Willis.  Never sure whether to classify that as the start or finish of a line  ???

Good luck

findem, thank you for that.

Thomas and Frances are alive in 1851!
Living in Shalford, Frances b. Finchingfield.

Dozens of Thurgood in Shalford, 1851 and I am trying to sort them out.

Thanks again.   CP

Here are some other places and dates where I noticed Thurgoods:-
1580 - 1593 Magdalen Laver.
1697 Good Easter.
1733 - 1739 Lindsell.
1737 - 1747 Bocking.
1753 Lt Dunmow.
1718 - 1781 Stebbing.
There are probably Thurgoods in those places before and after the dates, these are just Thurgoods I happened to notice.

Interesting to see the way Thomas and Frances moved around, 1797 in Finchingfield, 1799 in Shalford and back to Finchingfield sometime before 1851.

Good luck.
