I assume the alien means the same today as it did in those days, that he is from another country.

http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/census.html

from the above website

whether naturalized (Na=Naturalized, Pa=First Papers, Al=Alien),

Check out the website it looks very interesting.

Jason,

I take it that you have seen the entry on FamilySearch at:
http://www.familysearch.org
in the US Social Security Index for:

George EMMINGHAM, birth 18 May 1879, SSDI number issued in Oregon, death May 1977.

There are only 8 SSDI records for the name EMMINGHAM - George is the only one in Oregon, there are 5 in Idaho, 1 in Kansas, and 1 in Washington.

A Google for
"george emmingham"
finds a cemetery reference for the above George, his wife Lizzie and daughter Elsie Moore NEAVE in the Monroe Cemetery, Benton County, Oregon at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~orbenton/Cemeteries/Monroe.htm
NEAVE Elsie Moore (Emmingh), b 1897 d 1934, In plot with Emminghams   Daughter  Lot 451 Space 1 Row 12
EMMINGHAM Lizzie, b 1879 d 1921, Wife of George Emmingham (next to), 451 2 12
EMMINGHAM George, b 1878 d 1977, Next to Lizzie Emmingham (his Wife)  Father, 451 3 12

The cemetery is part of the Benton County site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~orbenton/index.html

George is probably the George EMMINGHAM on FreeBMD b Jun qtr 1879, East Retford.
