Arthur Jamouneau, music composer of Hull
« on: Monday 19 September 05 05:00 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about Arthur Jamouneau, who appears to have been a prolific music composer and publisher in Hull between about 1890 and his death in 1927. The British Library catalogue contains over 100 references to his compositions.

I found him and his wife, Eva (nee Mawer), in the 1901 Census (despite the fact that it was originally transcribed as Jamouncan!!). As far as I know, they had two daughters - Kathleen (1899) who died in infancy and Ida (b 1902).

According to one local book, he wrote mostly hymns and other religious works, and his music was popular with Sunday Schools. He lived in Victoria Avenue, Hull.

But apart from this, I have been able to find out very little about him and his music. There does not appear to have been an obituary for him locally. I do know that he was born in Guernsey - and I have no idea how he ended up in Hull.

Any suggestions on further avenues of research in Hull would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hi Footie

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

There's nothing even remotely like Jamouneau in the 1892 directory.  Have you checked with the Local Studies Library in Hull?  If not, I can have a look at the weekend.  Let me know.

Dear Suttontrust

Thanks for the kind offer of help.

I am not sure quite when (or why) he moved to Hull - but I have found his marriage to Eva Mawer in 1897 in Louth, Lincolnshire, where he gave his occupation & residence as Professor of Music in Kingston upon Hull. They had a daughter born in Hull in 1899, where they gave their residence as 104 De Grey St, Hull - he also appears in a Trade Directory that year at the same residence. By 1901, they were living at Victoria Avenue.

He died on 7 Dec 1927 at his residence, 173 Victoria Avenue.

I haven't had a chance to check with the Local Studies Library, but if you had a chance to see if there was an obituary for him in the local newspaper, I would be really grateful.

Many thanks

Footie

Hi, Footie.  I looked up the 2 local papers this morning.  Neither has an obituary for him.  The Hull Daily Mail (8/12/27) just has an announcement in the deaths column - "Jamouneau, December 7th at 173 Victoria Ave., Arthur James, music composer, aged 61 years, the beloved husband of Eva Jamouneau.  Service Queens Road Wesleyan Church, Friday at 2.00 pm".  There was no report of the funeral.
I would guess that he was not involved in the musical life of the city, despite being a composer.

Dear Suttontrust
Thanks very much for taking the time to check this out. The chapel where his funeral took place may be a clue. He composed mostly organ music - so maybe he was the organist at this church?
All the best

In the latest Family Tree mgazine there's a piece on an old book called "Free Church Musicians" by Chas Howes (Novello, 1909).  The mag prints the index, and Jamouneau is in there.  There's no way of getting hold of the book except through a reference library or 2nd hand book shop.
