Queenstown 1864
« on: Monday 19 September 05 06:03 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Bumpus, was born in Queenstown in December 1864.  Her father John was in the navy. I would like to find out how long they would have been in Queenstown. I know they were in Scotland by 1871.
Is there any way I can find out which naval vessels would have been in port and why wives and family would have been with them? John was serving as a boatswain on 'Terror' at one time but I have no idea if this was the ship he was on in 1864.
Thanks for any help.

Hello Islander,

I have been searching, with the assistance of Google, to find some useful information for you. My initial thought was the relevant documents would be somewhere in Cork but on reflection decided that the Royal Navy Museum might be a much better place to start your search. Documents pre 1925 are held at The National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU

Yours in genealogy, Christopher
