Parish Records Lookup please - JAY
« on: Monday 19 September 05 12:46 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Jay family in Essex, possibly Great Wakering, in the early 19th century. All I have to date is that Jessey Jay was born around 1819, the daughter of Thomas Jay, and was married in September 1840 to William Cowell in Hackney, London.

Any further details would be much appreciated.

Hi Ian

I am trying to trace the JAY family in Colchester. I have a no name JAY who married Ethel May STEEL. She was born in Beckinham, Kent in 1893. She had a brother; William Harold STEEL who was born in 1887 in Rotherhithe, Kent.

In 1954 the family were staying at 300 Chowdrary Crescent ? I cannot make out the last word which was on her brother's will.

Not much to go on, but that is all I have.

Regards
Kathryn

Hi Ian,
It appears that Jessey had a brother William, born 1813 in Great Wakering Essex, also a butcher, his marriage in 1839 (also in Hackney) to Charlotte Benfield, gives his father as Thomas Jay, butcher.
I can see no matching baptisms for William or Jessie, neither can I see Thomas, a butcher in 1841.

Since I first posted this back in 2005 I have visited the Essex records office and confirmed the details of William and Jessie's christenings in Great Wakering and also those of their other siblings Sarah, Eleanor, James and John. Their father, Thomas, married Sarah Ward in Great Wakering in 1796 and I was also able to trace her family in the local records but Thomas was obviously from out of the village as I was unable to find any other record for him.

Like you I have only been able to find Jessie and William in the census records.

Did you see the baptism of Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Jay, Gt. Wakering 04.07.1796.
There is also a Thomas Jay born 23.12.1776 in Southminster, son of Thomas and Susanna
