Hi Jap here is the info that i found

John Taylor married Martha Jane Rose in 1874 in London. On marriage cert says father's name Archibald Taylor and a Millwright, and John was a widower.
On the 1881 census it states John was born in Scotland. Mum recalls her Nan talking bout growing up in Scotland and a place called Greenock.
Found Archibald in the 1871 census and indeed he was a Millwright. Next found his death in 1875 in which he had been married twice. He remarried in 1863 so i knew the first wife was the mother to look for, her name was Janet(Jessie) Arthur. So on Scotlands people  i paired them up as parents for Baptisms and found these-

James 23/09/1838 Whitburn
Alexander Arthur 06/06/1840 Whitburn
Margaret 31/03/1844 Greenock old or west
Archibald 21/10/1845 Greenock old or west
Thomas 11/07/1847 Greenock old or west
Agnes 06/12/1854 Greenock middle.

No sign of my John tho. Then i found John's first Marriage to Agnes Mccallum in 1862  stating on it that his parents were Achibald and Janet Arthur! So bingo i had the right people.
So why should 6 children be Baptised and not John.
On one of Johns daughter Marriage cert ( my great nan) states her Father being John William Taylor.
By the way found out that John was a Bigamist as his first wife didnt die until 1875! Her Father registered the death.
Hope this helps,
Jane

Hi Jane,

I stumbled upon this website while doing some genealogy research. I was pleasantly surprised to see your posting on (Sept20/05). Archibald Taylor is my GG Grandfather. I went to the Greenock Corporation Cemetary in 2002 and have the deed to his gravesite along with 13 other Taylors in a double plot. I also have photos of the headstone. There are so many Archibald Taylor's in the area and Scotland but as soon as you mentioned Jessie Arthur I knew there was a connection.
Please e-mail me (*)

Thanks,

Robert Taylor

Hello Jane,

Apologies for not getting back to you.  Incidentally there are baptismal records in the IGI for the six children you mention and also one for a further child - Janet TAYLOR, bap 4 Dec 1836, Whitburn, West Lothian.

The only reason I can think of for the absence of John is that it was related in some way to the fact that the family moved from West Lothian to Renfrewshire between 1840 and 1844 - perhaps they were in the middle of the move and John just missed out, or perhaps they hadn't settled down and so didn't yet have a parish church, or perhaps John was actually baptized but the event took place in some church the records of which have not been indexed or have not survived ...

Anyway, I'm glad I asked for more details as now Robert has found you!

Good luck,

JAP

Hi Jap
Thanks for getting back to me. I since found the Baptism of Janet, but nothing for John. I think too that his Baptism has been lost but who knows in years to come something might turn up.
Good thing is i got my dates mixed up and he didnt remarry until 1876 so he wasnt a Bigamist.

Hi Jane,

I don't know whether to be glad or disappointed for you!  After all, it would be so-o-o boring if we didn't turn up some naughty people!

I had a Great-Aunt (I knew her well when I was young - she was just a very few years older than her niece, my mother) whose second husband, I have been told, was a bigamist!  I guess I should follow this up one day (did it appear in the lurid scandal sheets of the day?).  She lived until she was 99 and probably would have been glad to talk about her past - but, of course, it was the same old story; by then I had moved far away and was busy with children, career etc ...   There were so many long-lived people in my late mother's family who could have filled in all the gaps I am now struggling with ...

Good luck to you and Robert.

Cheers,

JAP

Jap i know what you mean. My mother is kicking herself now when it comes to not asking more questions. Her Grandfather was born in America but we just didnt know where. Has taken us 5 years to find out and doesnt help when the Surname was Taylor!
Has been really confusing sometimes and pretty funny as she has the Surname Taylor on both sides of her family. Have just found out the last month or so where the Scottish Taylors actually originated from.
So really excited about Robert and waiting to hear from him so we can exchange details with each other.
Thanks again for the help as much appreciated.
