Can you name this burial place, please?
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 05:25 BST (UK) »

Per the handwriting on the attachment, I am looking for the burial place for Elizabeth Wilson in 1848. I cannot read or understand the place names for this entry. Is it Hartfordshire (Hertfordshire) or Barkshire (Berkshire). Does anyone have any input for this handwriting, please?

I presume Elizabeth's entry (written about 1890) says buried, and the village has two 't' in the middle and one 't' in the county. (Overleaf 't' is definitely like these shown. I think the name starts with "H".)

I have found deaths per all of these same family dates. However, no two deaths are in the same area, so I don't know where any of the folks are buried. The last person, William Drury, died in Acton, Middlesex.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

B

Cor B, that's a real teaser ;D

The county is 4 letters and then shire, so I don't think it's Hertfordshire, I don't think there is much doubt that Elizabeth was buried, if we use the"b" from the buried, I think the county is Berkshire.

As to the place, we may as easily have a spelling problem here, as well as a reading problem.  Can you confirm that the 2nd death listed was Timothy? if so then I think the place may start with a T or possibly an F.

Be interesting to see what the other Chatters think

Well, this is what I think it says (with Elizabeth's original spelling)

Mary ann Brown Died Oct the 6th 1845
Tomothey Vilson Died Feb 28th 1840
Ann Vilson Died Nov 18 1835
Elizabeth Wilson Died Sept 3th 1848 beriad at Haitting hartshire
William Drury Died July 5th 1878

I think she's trying to write "Hertshire" (for Hertfordshire) but I have no idea what Haitting could be  :-\

I agree with Prue, it does seem to say "Hertshire", look at the "t" in "sept" and the "h" in "the". Wonder what it means by "Haitting"???  ???

Good Morning, everyone. I'm pleased to see that you are stumped about this place as well!

I have added a small part from overleaf. Notice the "H" for Hanah has a long loop, and so the original answer seems to start "Hi."  I do think it is Hertfordshire.

On the bottom line, notice the "t" in Matildia. It is not crossed. The "T" for Tomothey is the only "T", and I think it can safely be said this is Timothy. Perhaps it was pronounced differently by the person who wrote it.

I am not too sure of the literacy of the person who wrote this, but he or she was better than many I have read.

I don't know if this will help at al. We shall see what town names it may jog.

Regards,

B

What about HITCHIN?  The extra loop on the end of the capital H where we thought it said HAITTING could make it HITTING, which is pretty close.  And Hitchin is in Herts...

Long shot?  Worth a try!

Could the county possibly be Lancashire?  Written as Lankshire.

Another thought, maybe the town actually begins with A.  It's definitely written with an H but just as "H's" are often dropped they are also sometimes added on.
