Selfe - Britford, Wilts

I would like to find the christening record of my 3xg grandmother Mary Selfe who was born about 1796.  She gave places of birth on various census as Britford, Dogdean (can't find the place) and Broad Chalke.  I don't think it was Broad Chalke as most christenings for the period are on the IGI.  I expect her to have siblings John, Lucy, Elizabeth and another brother (possibly Henry). An additional sister Amelia was christened in Broad Chalke in 1805.  It would be lovely to confirm where the family was before Broad Chalke.

If someone is able to check the parish registers I would be most grateful.  Indeed does anyone recognise the place Dogdean?

To start with your question about Dogdean - there's a Dogdean Farm between Harnham and Odstock - not at all far from Britford. I'm not sure where the nearest parish church would have been but I think it could well have been any of those three villages. I've looked in my copy of BVRI, but none of those parishes have been transcribed, so we are definitely back to parish records.

I've only just been to the record office and am not planning to go back for a few weeks, but if no-one else goes before I do, I'll look it up for you then.

Hi Angela,

That would be very much appreciated as I can't get to Trowbridge myself.  The Selfe family were Yeoman farmers so its possible they had Dogdean Farm.  The Selfe's first turned up in Broad Chalke arround 1803 when John Selfe took a lease on Knighton Farm there.  I assume he was Mary's father but it would be nice to have proof.

 Hi Jill.... I'M not sure if this is anything to do with you but i will post anyway just incase, and sometimes when you gather all these snippets of info it may not be untill months later that something in them may be relevant to you. That happened to me from Salisbury Lib. I copied down hundreds of Birth deaths and marriages one afternoon just because they had the same surname in the surounding areas. That was a year ago. And now many of those old scribbings are actually my family!

My Mary Selfe married Raynold Randoll 15 Jun 1826 in Broad Chalke.

Just a refresh in case anyone is going to the Wiltshire Record Office and is kind enough to do a lookup for Selfe's in Britford, Harnham and Odstock.

The family I'm looking for are Mary, Lucy, Elizabeth, John and another son (possibly Henry) who were probably the children of John and Elizabeth Selfe.  It would be nice to find information from the christening records to back up my presumptions.  All children born before 1805.

The children were mentioned in a Durnford will which is no longer accessible on FamilyHistoryOnline - so I'm not sure how to find further details about the will.  Any ideas?

I haven't been to the record office in ages - I've just checked and you're still on my 'to-do' list 

I may be going next week, but work has been overwhelming lately so it may not be possible. If anyone else can get there that would be great.

As far as wills go - when I last went to the Record Office I was told there was a new surname index for the wills they hold, so I would have thought that a copy of the will should be reasonably accessible there.

I am tracing my family from Britford as well the Webb's also I live within 5 mins of Britford and my youngest daughter attends school there , let me know what I can do to help, ie photo check the church yard etc.
