Mechanical Labourer (Exm maker) COMPLETE
« on: Monday 26 September 05 16:48 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors has the above description in the 1881 census.  He was 54 at the time and had been a blacksmith's labourer in previous census.

I would welcome ideas as to what it means.

Hi David

Sorry if I've got your hopes up as I really don't know what Exm maker could mean ???  but I wondered if there might be any clues to be had from the occupations of people living around him.

Maybe if you posted his name and 1881 details we could have a look

He was Henry Johnson and in 1881 he was living in Trout Road Hillingdon.  At the time he was probably working for E.P.Baskin and Son, as he was in 1879. I haven't managed to find out what E.P.Baskin actually did.

In the next two houses on one side were his sons Henry and Thomas.  Henry was an Engine Drive working for Worths and Thomas a general labourer.  I am not sure who lived on the other side but in that area of the country there was little relationship between housing and employment.

Any thoughts appreciated

Hi David

It isn't Exm maker - its E+M maker

On the previous page a neighbour is a Pattern maker  Eng Works(Eng + mach maker) presumably 'engine and machine maker'
Kind of the enumerator to use a longer abbreviation here.

Its likely then that E P Baskin is the Eng Works mentioned above

Hope this helps
 ;)

Thanks Susan.  That is theproblem with using transcriptions.
