Halpin - Louth
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 08:45 BST (UK) »
Hi there everyone,

is anyone else related to the Halpin family of Drogheda, Louth? My ancestors were John Halpin and Maria (nee Owen / Owens / Cowan / Cowins). John was born in approx 1830 Louth.

I would be very interested in any likely baptismal entries for John, or marriage entries for John and Maria.

Maria was born in approx 1831 Kells, Meath. They lived initially at Drogheda, Louth then moved to England in around 1857, at first in Crook, Durham then Birkenhead, Cheshire, and then Liverpool, Lancashire. John Halpin died in the Liverpool Workhouse 31 December 1887. Maria died in the Liverpool Workhouse 9 May 1898.

Children included
1. Lawrence Halpin (b 1856 Drogheda, Louth) married Mary E unknown.
2. William Halpin (b 1858 Crook, Durham) married Mary unknown
3. Catherine Halpin (b 1860 Birkenhead, Cheshire)
4. Patrick Halpin (b 27 January 1865 Birkenhead, Cheshire)
5. James Halpin (b 1867 Birkenhead, Cheshire) married Mary J unknown
6. Richard Halpin (b 28 August 1869 Birkenhead, Cheshire)
7. Joseph Halpin (b 1871 Birkenhead, Cheshire) married Eliza unknown

Patrick (b 1865) was my great great grandfather, who emigrated to Australia on board the "Scottish Bard" in the early 1880s. He married Teresa Connolly 27 Sep 1887 at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. Children included:
1. Bernard Joseph Halpin (b 27 August 1888, d circa 1954)
2. Lawrence Andrew Halpin (b 9 November 1890, d 11 October 1917)
3. Liddia Maria Halpin (b 9 March 1893, d 13 October 1893)
4. Patrick Ambrose Halpin (b 20 August 1894, d 17 September 1969)
5. Vera Teresa Halpin (b 10 February 1897, d 26 Spetmber 1959)

Only Bernard (my great grandfather) and Vera married.

I would be interested in hearing from any descendants of this family or any other Halpins from the Drogheda, Louth; Birkenhead, Cheshire; or Liverpool, Lancashire areas.
 ;D
Best wishes,

Sean Halpin

Hi there, and compliments of the season to you all!  :)

My personal interest in the HALPIN family relates to my paternal Great Great Grandfather - PETER HALPIN - born 1834 in Castle Bellingham, County Louth.

PETER married ANNE WALL (1836-1897) in Kilsaran, County Louth on 1 April 1857, and then enlisted  in the 2/25 Regiment of Foot of the British Army in Liverpool on 5 May 1860 (signed on originally for 10 years), his occupation at the time was listed as a Labourer.

PETER and ANNE had 5 daughters:

ELIZA (1858 - ????)
MARY (1863 - 1905)
CATHERINE ESTHER (1869 - 1908) - my Great Grandmother
HARRIET (1871 - 1924)
EMILY (1872 - 1876)

In February 1868, well before his 10 years was up, PETER signed up for a further 13 years and 88 days, while stationed in Preston. He served in the Army until 11 September 1882 - Army No. 1116, but never actually took part in any campaigns, spending virtually all of his career in England. Discharged in York (Fulford Barracks).

I'm keen to take PETER and ANNE'S history back further, if anyone can help please? Unfortunately, I have no details of either set of parents.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and if anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

Best wishes!
