1851 lookup please
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 23:33 BST (UK) »
Suepip has very generously done a lookup for me in the 1841 census and found a WELTON family living in Brockdish. I would very much like to know where they were in 1851. The family consusted of Eli Welton who would be about 60, his wife Sarah who would be about 55. There were 3 children then George who would be 25, Maria who would be 24 and James who would be about 19. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Geoff,
Thank you so much for the information.
I believe George would be a relative, probably a brother as there seems to be very few Welton's around at that time.
Your help is much appreciated.
Regards, Joan

Hi Sue,
I think it is very likely that Susannah is a relative, also George, I am just having trouble finding the link, it is so frustrating. The Weltons were agriculture labourers mostly, so moved around that small area, from village to village, wherever the work was. Its also on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk, so I am having to travel to 2 different Records Office to look for information. My direct link is a Cornelius Welton, the only record I have of him is when he married a Jane Betts in Tibenham and had 3 children, Jane died in 1800, I do not know what happened to Cornelius but one of his sons Benjamin moved to London. I am going to the records office on Monday and Tuesday so will see if I can find out any more about Susannah, I will let you know.
Thanks for writing.
Regards, Joan

Hi from Canada:
I completed a full transcription of the Tibenham parish registers, 1650 - 1900 earlier this year.  There are 2 Jane Betts births - by Richard Betts and Elizabeth Baldwin, bap. 17th Dec 1775 and by John Betts and Sarah, bap 23 Nov 1755.  Jane (whichever one, probably 1775 one) married Cornelius Welton, by Banns, 22 Sept 1794, both were unmarried, witness was John Youngman.  Births for Cornelius and Jane: Richard, 16 Jun 1798, Benjamin, 4 Aug 1799.  There is also a burial of infant Maria on 3 Jan 1796 (but no baptism).  Jane, age 24 was buried 27 Jan 1800 (ahh.. so must have been the 1775 Jane!)  There also a burial of George Welton (no other details), 6 May 1858.
Hope this helps
I have more on the Betts family if needed

Hello woodyw and Finch. I don't know how old this thread is, and if you are still active, but I have only just found it (2022). I believe, if I have it right, that Cornelius Welton was the brother of my 5x g grandfather, and Susanna Drane the half sister of my 4x g grandfather John Welton. There are some parish's records not yet online in Suffolk, notably Hoxne which does not seem to have ever been indexed. It makes it very difficult to find the right family when they moved around between Norfolk and Suffolk doesn't it

I wonder if any further progress has been made on these Weltons, and if what I have fits with that. I have also got my family's DNA on various sites, hoping for a match to confirm this branch
