Hi Skylark, On free BMD there is the birth and death of a John CHILTON in March 1848. No. 17/335 and 17/298 respectively, at Wolverhampton.

Also there is a Richard CHILTON, born Wolverhampton 1852 6b/399.

Also on 1881 and 1901 census there is a Richard Chilton born about 1844 Wolverhampton, with family.

Hope this helps.......PHIL.

I have only just started the research into my family.  My Great grandfather was a Richard Chilton who on all the census returns from 1861 onwards put down his birth place as Wolverhampton.  However, according to oral history in the family he was born in Madeley Shropshire.  I have found an entry on the birth marriages and deaths of a Richard Chilton born in 1844 Madeley and am going to apply for birth certificate to find out if this is my G. Grandfather.   I know that he did have at least 2 brothers (names unknown) one of which went to be manager at The Central Hotel, Old Fallow Road Blackfords Cannock.  The other also lived locally but do not know what he did.  On the Census Returns there are three families in Hednesford Road (Chiltons) I know that Richard came to this area with two brothers - am working on the theory at the moment that the two other families may be related to him.

Dear Cathy

On the 1871 census a Richard and John Chilton were lodging with my G.Grandfather William Braidley (Bradley) and John Chilton married my g.aunt Susannah Bradley.  They emigrated to Australia, as did the rest of the Bradley family.

As far as I know Richard and John Chilton belonged to a large family whose grand parents Richard and Ann Chilton had a son Joel b. 1809 Dawley Shropshire.

Joel Chilton married Jane Walker b. 1807 Bliston, on the 11 Nov 1833 St Peter's Wolverhampton. Their children were all born in Willenhall (at least they were registered there)  William 1837, Thomas 1836, Martha 1841, Joel 1841, Richard 1843, John 1845, Jane 1846, Henry 1848, and Sarah 1850.

1861 - John (15) lodged with his brother William (24) and wife Rachael 24) in Chapel St. Wolverhampton together with sister Jane (14) and brother Henry (12).  Brothers Richard (19) and Joel (20) lodged with Hannah Hank (53) also in Chapel St.  They were all miners.

Thomas, 1871, was living in Hednesford nr. Cannock and he died Jan/Mar 1881.

1871 Joel was married and living with his new family in Rawnsley  Hednesford - miner.

1871 Henry and his new family were living at 9 Thomas St Wolverhampton - tin plate worker.

1881 Richard Chilton is living with his wife Emma and family in Hednesford Road Cannock - miner.

I can tell you loads more about John in Australia but I haven't followed Richard any further.

I hope these people are part off your family, if they aren't then you have had a pretty boring read!

all the best

Jean

Hi Jean, I was only answering your query, I wasn't looking for her, see posting 30/9/05.

I think it is Cathymjp who is after this information, you have just posted.

Cheers.........Phil.

Hi Jean,

The Richard Chilton  living in Hednesford Road, Cannock with Emma is my great grandfather.  This information you have given me is very interesting because it goes against what I was told by my Uncle about his origins but would back up the census returns.  I will now obtain the various death, marriage and birth certificates and see what I come up with.  I think the oral history in the family has to be taken with a pinch if salt.  My father never spoke about his grandfather or grandmother.  Grandfather Richard died on10.03.1906, before my father was born but grandmother died in 1928 long after my father was born in 1916 so this is much of a mystery.  The other mystery is that on his daughter Lizzie's marriage certificate his occupation is listed as a Farmer but I have no evidence yet  support this and certainly he was not a farmer in 1901.  Very pleased to have this information.  I will keep you posted of developments.  Many thanks.
