Fairleigh Sussex
« on: Monday 03 October 05 11:11 BST (UK) »
Hi

Has anyone heard of the place Fairleigh in Sussex?

It is a birthplace on an 1851 census, and I was
wondering whereabouts it was in Sussex.

Thanks
Ewan

Hi Ewan,

Are you sure it's not a mistranscription for Fairlight?

There's a Fairleigh in Surrey, close to borders of Kent and Greater London.

Oh  guys, now I am really confused :-\

On the 1851 census it says Sussex with Fairleigh written before it.
FAIRLIGHT could have been transcribed incorrectly from FAIRLEIGH I suppose.
But on the other hand FAIRLEIGH in Surrey is the exact spelling on the
1851 census.

Unless, of course, the SUSSEX bit has been transribed wrong, and it should
be SURREY.

Can anybody help with this decision please.

Thanks :)
Ewan

What name are you researching?  If you can find them on another census it might solve the problem.

Hi Andrea

Thanks for the reply.

I only have this person - Henry Cox aged 36 on the 1851 with his family at
Upper Gough St 42 Birmingham.  He is not on the 1861 or the 1871
census with them.

The only other option is the 1841 census for the same area perhaps.

Many thanks
Ewan

Hi Ewan,

Given that the 1851 census in which he appears was taken in Birmingham, then I think Surrey is a good possibility.  An enumerator in Birmingham might not place too much importance on distinguishing between Sussex and Surrey.

1841 won't give you the town - it'll just say "Yes" or "No" to the question: Born in County?

Have you tried to find him in 1881?

Hello Stovepipe

Thank you very much for that information, I suppose
Surrey makes more sense, although I haven't as yet
found it on a map.  I was hoping that it would have been
Sussex.  I guess you can't have it all.

As for the 1881 I have his wife down as a widow on the
1871.

Ewan

If you google "Fairleigh Sussex" it does come up with a Fairleigh near Winchelsea.  Possible?  Check it on www.genuki.com
Who was his wife?  Any kids?  Armed with that information we might be able to find them in 1861.
The full quote for 1851 might help too.
