Crimea soldier John Tamkin
« on: Monday 03 October 05 19:16 BST (UK) »
John James Tamkin from Waltham Abbey served in Crimea.  He was born 1 Jul 1832 and was married in Virginia USA in Jun 1856.  (talk about quick off the mark).

He then fought for the Confederates in the Virginia 7th Cavalry in the American Civil War in 1864.

With this little information can any one advise me how to trace his Crimea service which was documented in his US obituary. (I live in Berkshire)

Many thanks

Thank you for the above information Annie.  The first link was very useful as it shows that I have the wrong unit for him.  He was in fact a sergeant in the 11th Virginia Cavalry.  Seeing as he entered as a sergeant this would seem to indicate that he had previous service somewhere probably as a cavalryman.
