Can't find John W CALLADINE b.4 Dec. 1849 Anywhere.
« on: Tuesday 17 August 04 18:05 BST (UK) »
For years I have been looking for John W. CALLADINE, born 4 December 1849....but who knows where! On his marriage document where he was fighting in India, he says he's born in England and his father's name is Joseph -  deceased. That was ca. 1872.
He went to Canada prior to the 1901 census and once again he claims England as his place of birth and gives the same date for birth.
I don't know what to do or where to look now. Any ideas please?
I have thought that since his birth was in 1849, he had to be in an 1851 census somewhere or even an 1861 with his family.

You would need someone with a Name index for the whole of England.  I have a tiny portion of that, being the index for "parts" of Leeds.   If we can't find him on that at least you could eliminate those areas covered on this CD.   If you decide to go down this road i would advise you to keep some sort of record of where you've looked.

The CD i have covers RG9-3349 to RG9-3360  1861.

I do have the W Yorks Census 1841 but it's virtually unreadable and without an actual address i could'nt possibly start to go through it all.

Let me know if i can be of any further help

Hello there

The vast majority of them seem to be in Nottinghamshire.

Not saying that's where your chap comes from but it's a good place to start!

Hi Shash,

I don't know if you're still searching this person but I have found the following entry on 1837online:

Dec 1849
Calladine John
Burton-on-T. Vol. 17 p.27

Hope this helps...

I am so sorry. I lost everything on my computer and didn't think to check out rootschat for any posts. You have found my John Calladine for me and I am very grateful. Thankyou for helping to break down a brickwall.

Don't know if this will help- or make matters worse  ::)

But this is the only possible John Calladine from the 1861 census that was born in Staffs around that time. Why on earth the rest of the family were called Hoult is beyond me  ;D  Maybe mum remarried, and it should have said step son?

John Calladine 1850  Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, England Son  Hilton  Staffordshire
Edwin Hoult 1855  Hilton, Derbyshire, England Son  Hilton  Staffordshire
Ellen Hoult 1832  Peters Parish, Derbyshire, England Wife  Hilton  Staffordshire
Joseph Hoult 1832  Hilton, Derbyshire, England Head  Hilton  Staffordshire
Josh Hoult 1861  Hilton, Derbyshire, England Son  Hilton  Staffordshire
Mary Ann Hoult 1857  Hilton, Derbyshire, England Daughter  Hilton  Staffordshire
Samuel Hoult 1859  Hilton, Derbyshire, England Son  Hilton  Staffordshire
Wm Hoult 1853  Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, England Son  Hilton  Staffordshire

I have looked at the image and it is very clear so couldn't have been mistranscribed.

Perhaps you have more info now or a connection with the name- maybe you know what his mums name is.?

All the best

Hi Carol, You have enlightened me.  I was really stuck. I can explain it to you. When John Calladine was born in 1849, only his mother Ellen Calladine was on the birth certificate. I only learned this the other day from a super helper.
In June 1852, Ellen married Joseph Hoult (BMD) and they had all those Hoult children. When John got married in the 1870's he put down Joseph Calladine as his father, as Joseph Hoult was the only father he ever knew. (he put down calladine which had confused me for years)
I did not know that in 1861 they would be living in Staffordshire. This might help me to discover John's wife.
I thankyou so much for taking the time to send me the  information that I really needed.
Good luck in your own research. I checked your surnames and I don't see a match. Sorry.
