THE STRAND SCHOOL, Brixton existed in the 1920's - does it still exist?
« on: Wednesday 05 October 05 19:03 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
A member of my family taught at an educational establishment called The Strand School in the 1920's; all I know about it is that it was situated in Brixton.  Can anyone tell me whether it still runs, and if so where; or if not, when it might have closed down?
Very best wishes,
Keith

The building in Elm Park still stands, but it is no longer a school.  I don't know when it closed as a school.  Some time in the 80's possibly.  It was certainly still a school in the early 70's.

Not sure what function it performs nowadays, either.  Might be some form of adult education, but I'm not sure.

Hope somebody else can fill in the details for you.

Hi, Stovepipe,
Thanks so much for that rapid reply - you're obviously a local!  The Elm Park detail you give ought to be useful to me if I have a bit of a Google now...

Hi Keith,

Just found a little bit more.  It's name and address is
The Strand Centre Elm Park, London, SW2 2EH

Various community activities seem to be held there.

Here's a map:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=530750&y=173750&z=1&sv=530750

Don't confuse it with the primary school in the above map - the Strand is marked as "Coll", across from the junction of Elm Park and Craignair Road.

Stovepipe,
Great to realise that the structure still stands, and is still providing something useful today.  And whatever happened to the "Park" element of Elm Park?  It all looks like solid streets now...

Keith,

It's a bit of a long shot, but I have several Strand School Magazines from 1959 to the 70's.  They often contain references (mostly obits) to former staff, some from the 1920's and earlier.

If you post your family member's name I'll see if he gets a mention, and give you the details if he does.

One thing to remember is that the School was originally founded in the Strand, not Brixton, where it was associated with Kings College Hospital.  I don't know exactly when it made the move to Elm Park, but I think it was before 1920.  Could be wrong about that date, though.

There's a little history of the School here :

http://www.aim25.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search2?coll_id=3071&inst_id=6

It looks like the school moved to Brixton in 1913 and closed in 1979.  It certainly wasn't operating as a school in 1982 when I worked in Brixton.

Hope this helps.

Dragonlore,
Thanks very much for all this extra information on the school.  I feel that my query about the place has been more than satisfied now.  I hadn't realised that the history of the place went back so far...

Hi Keith. I have a school photo of class of  November 1922, would you like it ?
I would like to pass it on to someone. The teacher in the photo is Mr Towler, sitting next to my great uncle.
