help interpreting navy record ADM 188/652 please

I’m looking for help interpreting the Royal Navy service records for one of my tree.
His service number is J2845 and date and period of engagement was 17th June 1910 (his 18th birthday) – 12 years.

The service record however gives service for three years before the date of engagement and then stops abruptly a year after the date of engagement.

The record gives:
Ship   Rating      Dates
Ganges  Boy 2cl       25 July 07 –
Ganges  Boy 1cl       6 Mar 09 – 6 May 09
Berwick Boy 1cl       7 May – 10 Sep 09
Pembroke ditto          11 Sep – 22 Nov 09
Terrible     ditto          23 Nov 09 – 11 June 10
Powerful   ditto          12 June 10 –
Powerful   Ord            17 June 10 – 2 June 11

In the Remarks column it says:
10/- Grat for Raisg V(or possibly U)-90   Ganges Aug 08
 Run 2-6-11 Powerful

In the whither and why discharged column it says “Run”

How do I interpret this. Am I right in assuming he joined the Navy as a Boy 2cl (2nd class?) in 1907, and enlisted as an Ordinary (?) on his 18th birthday for 12 years service.

What does ‘run’ mean. Did he run away or had some period of time run? Or something else?

What is Raisg V(U?)-90  ?

I’ld be grateful for any help interpreting this,
Thanks
T

Tigger,

I'm afraid to say that ' Run ' is a Navy term for deserted or absent without leave.

Which suggests he deserted HMS Powerful on 2.6.1911.

I'm guessing, but could the other be a gratuity for passing from boy 2nd class to boy 1st class?  Or perhaps for some other deed.  Ten shillings seems to be a handsome sum for the times.

Since the dates coincide, it's also likely that on his 18th birthday he went from Boy 1st class to Ordinary seaman

Thanks for that, Dragonlore.
Hmmm...my family seem to have made a habit
of running away!

After posting that question - which was about my Grandfather's
brother - I just tried searching on my Grandmother's surname and
stumbled across a surprise.

My Grandmother's brother joined the Ganges in August 1908.
Both boys left the Ganges and joined the Berwick on the same
day (7th May 1909) and stayed there until 10 Sep 1909 when
they went to separate ships.

My Grandmother's brother had a terrible record after that and
was finally discharged ' "S.N.L.R." in view of record'

so I immediately have more questions....

what is "SNLR"?

could the "Grat for Raisg V" in August 1908 be a gratuity for raising a volunteer perhaps...anyone know if that is possible?

Now I'm intregued by all this!
Thanks,
T

Tigger

According to Acronymfinder.com,  SNLR stands for Services No Longer Required

And I like the idea of Raising a volunteer.

Tigger,

HMS Ganges until the mid sixties was a Naval Boys Training Establishment, in Ipswich. In the fifties and sixties they took boys from the age of 15. Not too sure about before that.
The Terrible and Powerful were both ships, I think Pembroke was a Naval Barracks not sure about the Berwick.
Try doing a Google search.
He would have been termed a Boy until he reached the age of 18. From that age he could then take an exam to become an Ordinary seaman, then to Able Seaman.

The others have the remarks correct, but I cannot help with the Grat part. As someone has said 10 shillings was a lot of money in those days. When I joined as a boy in the late fifties the going rate of pay was seven shillings and sixpence a fortnight.
