CORDNER from Massereene
« on: Thursday 06 October 05 17:53 BST (UK) »
My great-great grandfather, William Thompson Cordner appears on the 1881 census in Boston (USA) "born 1841, Ireland".  He named one of his children Marie Massereene Cordner and an old family tale (yes, one of those!) says that Cordners worked on Viscount Massereene's estate in the 1800s.

Given that this is all the information I have (IGI, Rootsweb and GenesReunited have no useful info that I can find and I've tried googling with no luck), can anyone suggest any website links I could try?

Any help would be greatly appreciated ('cos it's desperately needed - I'm stumped!)

Many thanks
Philip

Philip,

There are a lot of the Massereene documents and papers at PRONI.
Some of them might contain some information about your Cordner family
www.proni.gov.uk/records/USING/privatem.htm
1873 C. K Cordner was the agent at the Massereene estate

1880 Cordner, C. K., estate agent, Victoria Chambers, res., Holywood

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hi Philip

William could have named Maria after the area that his family came from so there could be  some truth in your family tale (I as my parent did to me)

Massereene is right next to the town of Antrim just across 6 mile water .

Sir Hugh Cloltworthy built Antrim Castle in 1613 Lord Massereene made improvements in 1813.

I have looked for  Cordner's and found robert , henry , william and john in Blairs and Shankill areas but I found a William CORNER (note the spelling) in Doagh which is not far from Antrim town.

You can buy books called "memoirs of Ireland" vol 29 has Marrereene in it,from the Ulster Historical Foundation       www.ancestryireland.co.uk

hope this can help.....will get back if I find ought else

Many thanks, Steve and Anthony.

The definite link of Cordner to the Massereene estate is perfect - it proves that at least one family legend has some basis in fact.  I had thought that the Cordners (or Corners) were labourers, but if one was the agent for the estate there is more likely to be a paper trail somewhere.

Clement K Cordner JP looks a good clue for me to follow up - I'll google him and see what I find.  Oriel Lodge ties in nicely because Viscount Massereene is also Baron Oriel.

Thanks again.
