James McMurray: Borgue 1826
« on: Saturday 08 October 05 01:40 BST (UK) »
Where oh where did he go ??? LDS lists James McMurray, son of John McMurray and Isabella Shaw, as having been born in Borgue on 21 Feb 1826. I have not been able to find James on Scotlandspeople (strange that LDS have this OPR record but not SP?). I have tried searching all James McMurray/McMurries born in 1826 in Kirkcudbrightshire, give or take two years, again without success. No death registration either. Census records from 1851 on have shown the rest of the family, but no James. Does anyone have any ideas, short of suggesting that he died young, or visiting the Archives? I am in the USA ::) Is anyone else researching McMurray from Anwoth & Girthon/McClune from Dunrod/Shaw/McFegan?

Thank you!

Hi.

Welcome to the Murray/Shaw Land of Lost Information.

I have found James and his family on

Record no. 24  'Murray/McMurray' site - just type this in (Murray/McMurray)on Google and it will come up with a rootsweb site.

This should either help or hinder - (unless of course you already have this record).

I too am looking for Murray and Shaw but for me it is Elizabeth Shaw to James Murray (ggg grandparents) both supposedly of Balmaclellan and born in 1811.  The information I have for Elizabeth (Shaw) Murray is that she is widowed by 1871.  I have tried every resort possible but cannot find a death for my James Murray.  The only other information I cannot access from the SP site is James Murray my great grandfather and the 1891 census - it is not allowing me access for some reason.

Best of luck with your own Murray/Shaw research.

Yours J.A.

Thank you Northerngirl! I have in fact seen the data base you referred me to, but appreciate your input. I have come acoss your Shaws many times, and have wondered whether my Isabella was closely related, or only distantly? I haven't done much work on the Shaws, simply because the McMurrays have kept me busy for four years now! That and the fact that Isabella's parents are recorded as having been Nathan Shaw and Isabella Mclean. No Nathan's anywhere except for a Nathan McMurray, bell hanger in Gatehouse of Fleet, who seems to have come from Stranraer and not apparently directly related. But who knows? - our earliest known McMurrie (another James) was in Anwoth late 1700's ....along with the Shaws. Have you seen the Isabella Shaw (from Balmaclellan) Will on SP? Its the right area for your Shaws ....
and I'll keep an eye open for them now that I know that you are looking. I have also just discovered, with help from Callywoods (who is a distant cousin from GH of Fleet), that James McMurray appears in the 1841 census in Tongland, age 15! So he didn't die young ....well, it appears not before 1841. Do you know how I can send you my email address without sharing it with the world?!

Hello Megan

I notice you use the Mc for Murray still.  As much as I understand the surname does not have the Mc attached to it.  Have you tried James Murray instead of McMurray? The Murray/McMurray site has him as James Murray only.

I'm intrigued as to your information on Elizabeth Shaw and James Murray.  The only references I can find to them is on the IGI and Murray/McMurray sites for their children's births.  I also have copies of two son's marriages in 1859 and a daughter's marriage in 1866 - all of which mention James and as there is no information about him being deceased - have to assume he is still alive in 1866.

Ironically I have traced Elizabeth's father, mother, and brother to a place - not yet found - called Humbor Parton.  Elizabeth is not to be found in this information.  Elizabeth died in 1890 aged 72 years which would mean she was born about 1818.

I think if you click on your own site name - Scatza - (in bold) it should take you into a back page. If you go to the bottom of your profile information there is a section for personal replies.

Did you find a George Shaw, born Balmaclellan about 1810?

Hi - I am new to Roots Chat.
I am researching the McMurray line and found a connection to Shaw. My research centers around William McMurray, B. 1842 in Ireland to John and Catherine also of Ireland. He had a brother James, sister, Elizabeth, brother Thomas. The family emigarted to London in aprox 1845.  William's sibs were born in Lancashire and St. Pancras London.
In the 1901 England Census William McMurray and his wife Jane have a grandaughter living with them named "Norah Shaw".

any of this ring a bell?

thanks~

Hi Catjoy

Doh - sorry - I've just read this posting I've obviously missed it until now.

The McMurray/Shaw connection is very interesting as I still cannot find much about my James Murray - no Mc attached to the surname - yet!.  He died in 1843 which is very inconsiderate as he left no information about his parents!! - if he had died > 1855 that would have been much easier.

Scatza is the person who has lots of information on the McMurray/Shaw connection - we've chatted quite a bit via Personal Messages - PM's and by some quirky coincidence met purely by chance in the Dumfries & Galloway Family History Centre.

Keep in touch though - and a very big welcome to Rootschat - it's a brilliant site.
