Pauper
« on: Sunday 09 October 05 11:42 BST (UK) »
I eventually found my gg grandfather in 1851 (the name had been mis transcribed >:()
He is George McVeety  born Ireland <1823> . Under occupation it says "Pauper formerly cotton weaver." I presume this means he was receiving some form of help from the parish. Where do I need to look for any records ??? The parish was All Souls Manchester.

Thanks Ken
Had a look at the link. It only has birth and marriage for All Souls. Have to keep searching.
Thanks

Hi Linda

Why not try emailing Manchester archives & Local studies http://www.manchester.gov.uk/libraries/arls/index.htm I have found them helpful in the past at locating info.

Thanks, I do have him on the 1851 census and it is there that he is listed as pauper. I e-mailed the archives library and they said that there would not be any further records anywhere. So it seems I won't find out any more. He died in 1860 aged 37 of asthma.

Its worth contacting the church directly.  Some churches have deposited their registers but still have some of the contents of the parish chest.  They may have minutes which could help you.

Hi Linda,

Just posted a reply to you.  In my haste I forgot to put my name, sorry it`s John.  George McVeety`s parents were William McVeety (bC1792 in Donegal) & Elizabeth (or Isabella) Spencer.  My 2x great-grandmother was Isabella McVeety (bC1830 in Galway) & she married Andrew Diley at Manchester Cathedral in 1856.  Hope this helps.

regards,

John
