1871 Glamorgan JONES Please. Completed.
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 13:42 BST (UK) »
Would like to find  in 1871 Welsh Census Please,  my Great Grandmother, :
Mary Anne JONES  born in Merthyr Tydfil but could be in Llanelly Brecon?

Details I have:

Mary Anne JONES  1865+   in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Aged 22 on her Marriage Certificate in March 1884 in Llanelly Brecon.  Her father is given as 'David Jones a Collier'.  Husband Charles SMITH b1860 Blaenavon/Brynmawr.

1901 she is in Bailey Street, Brynmawr - aged 34  with husband Charles SMITH they settled in the area and had 7 children.

1891 in Brynmawr aged 26.

1881 - At  High Germany Cyfarthfa.

There are loads of Mary Ann(e) Jones born the same time span in Merthyr Tydfil.

I am told that Mary or her Mother?  worked in a Hotel but not sure if before she married or after.

Sorry rambling and do realise this is a tall order.
Thank you
Reyz

I can find this family again in 1871, with the addition of

Jane b 1863, Esther b 1865, Sarah b 1868, Thomas b 1870

Ref: RG10/5396/83/12

Mary Ann is 10 and written Marian.  The address is 95 Plymouth Rd, M/T

In 1881 they are at the same address, but MA is not at home (this might fit with the one you found?)  No further children.

It is difficult to be sure with JONES, but sometimes an address or a naming pattern will help.

Hi
Thats great  :)

Mary Anne's daughter-in-laws family (my Gran) were living in Lower Merthyr in John Street at the same time, so that sounds quite hopeful.

Thanks a lot for your time and trouble
best wishes

I think there is a kind of empathy between those of us with JONESes - we like to try to help at least!

There are several Mary Anns who are servants in 1881, but you couldn't really hope to prove which is yours.

One thought - is she certainly born Merthyr Tydfil, as there is also Merthyr Cynog in Breconshire?

Yes I can empathise  :) I have JONES on another twig.

That is a good point about the Merthyr's, fortunately for my research,  on the 1901 Mary is down as born in Merthyr Tydfil.

I have sent the details you found to a Grandaughter of Mary Anne's in Wales.  It might ring a bell.  It didn't.

Thanks again for your help

Update Now Found /Solved.

Just to update this thread with new information I have found :
Arran Roots family were not the correct one but all helps with process of emimination.

My Mary Ann JONES was born 1865+
I cant find a birth certificate as too many but managed to eliminate before 1865 with the help of Glamorgan register office.

Mother Elizabeth c1835-40  - down as Eliza on two Census
46 in 1881,   60 in 1891,  1901 deceased?

Sister Amelia born 1872    all down as born in Merthyr Tydfil

on both Mary Ann and Amelia's  wedding certificates :  Father  David Jones a Collier
Though Mary Ann's husband has his father down as 'David Smith a Collier', perhaps she copied??

On Amelia's birth certificate  in 1872 no fathers name. Mother Elizabeth JONES.

I found Mary Ann JONES  16  and her Mother Eliza  46   and sister Amelia  9 in 1881
High Germany   Cyfarthfa  Merthyr Tydfil
Eliza is a Widow aged 46

1 have searched the 1871 Census in Cyfarthfa -   High Germany / Back of Black Bull Inn /
and Quarry Row which is the same area as Amelia was born a year later and where they are living in 1881.

Nothing for a Eliza(beth) Jones and Mary Ann aged  about 6.

Nothing in the Merthyr Tydfil area of Glamorgan area, that fitted Mary Ann and Mother with and without father/husband David Jones.

I found some of the neighbours in the Workshouse prior to 1871 and wonder if the JONES girls were there?

Wonder if anyone has access to the Workshouse 1871 Census and could look please?

1891 1901 the family are in Brynmawr.  Both their husbands were from Byrnmawr so no clues there.
Mary Ann JONES husband Charles SMITH parents were David and Eliza too by coincidence..

Both Mary Ann and her mother are down as Welsh speaking/both in 1891.  So must have been born in Wales.

Hope this is clear
Many thanks
Reyz.
