All is not what it seems!!!

I was rooting last night for my great Aunts husband Edgar in 1851 and came across the following transcription

Ann Francis abt 1780  Syrian Arab Republic, Cobham, Syrian Arab Republic Head  Lambeth  Surrey   
Edgar Francis abt 1828  Syrian Arab Republic, Cobham, Syrian Arab Republic Son  Lambeth  Surrey

Almost dismissed the entry assuming these two were some Victorian diplomats back from far flung Colonies then noticed the 'Cobham' squeezed in between. So I went for the actual entry.

So tonights competion is - can anyone spot 'Syrian Arab Republic'???????????? :-\ :-\

I think it is a conspiracy to make this research even more tricky than it is already :o :-\ :o

The Syrian Arab Republic only came into existance in 1946, once the state had gained independence from the French.

I think someone somewhere has been a bit over enthusiastic.

The answer is simple, they were spy's and the Syrian Arab Republic is written in code ;D

a (rather convoluted) anagram of Syrian Arab Republic is:

Scribbler, U R a pain, - ya!

I've often thought this about enumerators - but the transcriber deserves a special YA! (and Boo and Sucks!)

I haven't seen that one before for Surrey but - transcribers being mostly Indian - I have seen a great many instances of Somalia for Somerset and one of St.Helens Lancs becoming Sri Lanka. ???
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

I have found a huge number of cases in the Welsh census where the following birthplace:

Kerry, Montgomeryshire

has been transcribed as Kerry, Ireland :o

It is so obvious when looking at the images that it's not Ireland :-\

I think really the organist scripture reader was definately a cover for his real job as a spy Jag  . He must have had to do something for a living before he went on to be a Fancy Repository shop owner!!! It was all a cunning disguise, our very own 1800s James Bond!! :o
