Hi Suse

Have just scrolled through the 1841 census for Poling (never knew it existed till I read your post) and although I found several COLLINS families, there was not 1 single entry for Collier

Do you have any further info that might help to locate the family

Not a single COLLIER in the Poling baptisms on the IGI I'm afraid. :(

and just one marriage on 25th Nov. 1735 between a

Susan COLLIER and Isaac TILLY.

Any other possibilities for William's place of birth?

I, too, found no Collier baptisms at Poling in the IGI.

The nearest I came was this one:

CHARLES COLLIER BURTON
     Male

Event(s):
Christening:     08 MAR 1812      Poling, Sussex, England

Parents:
     Father:     JOHN BURTON
     Mother:     MARIA

Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.

Batch: C070911

It's possible, given the child's middle name, that Maria's maiden name was COLLIER.  Not certain to be, though.

Thanks very much for these responses - based on this I have looked back at the original documentation and believe that the name is actually Collins (not Collier) - it is sometimes difficult to read the original! (at one point Poling was transcribed as Poland!) Any thoughts on Collins?
Thanks
Suse
