Brickwall on death records PERRY
« on: Friday 14 October 05 05:06 BST (UK) »
Im wondering if anybody  can help me please. I seem to have hit a brick wall. I have been searching for a death record for a William Perry. His last child Elizabeth Ann was born 16 Aug 1855.  He doesnt appear on 1861 census. I have his wife  Sophia Perry as Head. They were living in Downing street Bodmin on 1851 census and then Masons Arms Beer House High street Falmouth in 1861. I assume he died between 1854/55 - 1861, but havent been able to find any trace in the indexes. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
Thankyou.

There are three records in FreeBDM for a William Perry from Cornwall   in the given timeframe - noting that the death records on freeBDM for 1860/61 are virtually non existant.  Where was the birth of Elizabeth Ann registered?

Dec 1855 Perry  William    Truro  5c 93
Sep 1856 PERRY  William     Liskeard  5c 49
Dec 1857 Perry  William     Helston  5c 154

All of the above are in a 20 mile radius of Bodmin.

Thanks Trish,
I had found those ones you mentioned but thought with Elizabeth Ann being born in Bodmin the death would have been registered there. Did find one record for Bodmin 1854  but turned out to be the wrong one. He was too old (77) My William was born in 1813, so am looking for someone around 40 - 47 years old. Were all deaths registered?

Thanks again

I think by 1857 most were, but this may not be so - someone else may have better knowledge. (Like you, I am in Australia).

It does become expensive buying multiple certificates to find the correct one  ???

He could have been away for work/out of the country - what was his occupation?

Another way would be to check www.familyhistoryonline.net for monumental inscriptions/cemetery records.  They have more than 9000 records for Falmouth (across three cemetaries) and many more for other parts of Cornwall.  Even if he was away etc, he may have been brought back and buried in a family plot - you can look for the burial of Sophia, say, and see if he's in the same place.

Thanks Jorose,

1851 census had him as a Tailor and Lodging house keeper, although I suppose he could have been out of the district working as a Tailor. Havent been able to find Sophia s Death record either. She was on the 1901 census living at Berkley Vale Falmouth but have not found any record of her after that. Have also rechecked family history online website with no result.

Hi
Have also looked on the 1860/1861 death indexes for William Perry but to no avail. Also looked for a death for Sophia after 1901 but no go.

I did find William as a 25 year old Tailor on the 1841 census living with the Darley family in Prison Lane,  Bodmin, so assume he wasn't married then.

The 1871 census also has Sophia as Head, Widow,  born 1822 living in Falmouth with her father in law William 85, a Retired Farmer, and son William J. 23, Ships Carpenter, Grace 18, Machinist and Elizabeth Ann 15, Boot Binder.

On the 1861 census Sophia is a widow, so assume, like you that William died 1854/55 - 1861.

Sorry, I can't be of more help.

Good hunting
