Julius / Joanna Peters, 1871, 1891, Hull
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 17:22 BST (UK) »
The firm of Julius Peters made soft drinks and were in High St, Hull, from 1874 to the 1930s.  By 1882 the directory says "Mrs Joannah Peters".  There's a Johanna Peters on the 1881 but unlikely to be the right one.  I would be grateful for any help from other censuses.
Many thanks.

It seems she's more likely the Susannah Peters in 1881, b. Germany (Bremen?), Ginger Beer Manufact.
Perhaps when transcibing, the enumerator took his 'Joh' for a 'Sus'? (The image definitely says Susannah)

Thanks so much, both of you.  If I've sorted this out, Julius was an innkeeper in 1871, at the Fleece Inn, with his wife Johanna.  The 1881 has her wrongly transcribed as Susannah.  In 1888 she married Peter Gerdt and although the firm was still in business she is not recognised as the head of it in 1891.  By 1901 Peter is managing the factory.
It isn't that strange that there were 2 Johanna Peters given Hull's links with Germany, but looking at the "other" one, since her son worked in a bottling stores they may have been related.
Once again, thanks for your help.  ;)
