Hi Miranda,

I have a Grace Willan born Crosby Ravensworth Westmorland in 1861. She married Michael Ellwood also of CR.

Does this help?

There is a Lowthwaite in/near Kirkoswald and a Rownthwaite in the Orton/Birkbeck Fells/Raisbeck area south of Crosby Ravensworth.

There is a site which names the small hamlets in Cumbria covered by the 1851 census:

http://rolyg.members.beeb.net/CensusPlaces.htm

which is useful.

Thanks .......

I need to start looking somewhere ....... I really have no idea where she came from.

Normally it's easy as they get married in the village/town of the bride but not this time.

Miranda

If your relative came from Milburn in Westmorland then it is likely that the Lownthwaite you are looking for is a farm just outside the village of Milburn which my family have farmed since about 1889. The farm is still in our family now. Let me know if you want any more info.

Hi LJ71
Welcome to rootschat.  That is a really interesting bit of information for RootsSearch as it puts Jane Willan living near Milburn so likely to be local.   Westmorland is very well covered by the IGI so I wonder if her name has been mistranscribed.  It might be worth getting the parish register on film to search at your nearest LDS centre RootsSearch.  They are worldwide and listed on familysearch.org.  They will also have burials which are very useful.
Oh, I see that the record of the marriage quoted is a member submitted one.  It also shows as Townthwaite.  I cannot find an extracted record to back it up.   Have you looked at the original register??  Member submitted records have to be treated with caution.  It may be worth trying to contact the LDS member who put it on the IGI to see what their source is.
