Was he in the armed forces????
« on: Wednesday 19 October 05 21:47 BST (UK) »
Can I begin by asking that you bear with me while I waffle my way round my query - deep breath - here goes!

I am trying to find my grandad - CHARLES HENRY WELCH born circa 1883- a very elusive man - I have already had untold help from fellow Rootschatters, but he cannot be found before 1907!!!

I have been told by a cousin that her father seemed to remember Charles saying he was in the Royal Engineers, had been based at Woolwich, London and may have gone to Ireland, when? haven't a clue!  Yet on his marriage cert. it says nothing about the army, just has labourer.

Is there anyway of finding out if he was in the forces?  If so how/where?

Failing this does anyone know of an inter-galatic version of Rootschat where aliens do look ups on other planets???

Regards

Do you have his marriage cert? showing his fathers name/occupation? What area of the country is he from?

Is this his birth reg?

Charles Henry Welch June 1884 Ashton under Lyne Vol 8d Page 499

(There was one in December 1883 Nantwich, but there was also a death registration in the same quarter, so obviously not that one)

Catherine  :)

Scrap that one, found a death 3 years later!  :-\

Catherine & Wizz

Apologies for not replying sooner - computer's been a bit tempera'mental' for a few days.

Wizz - could you give me the details of the 1901, I looked but couldn't find anything.

Catherine - I also found them, just can't find his!!!!  I have his marriage cert. but it hasn't been any help whatsoever.  It says his father was a lighterman, but I couldn't find him on the list so think perhaps he might have 'improved' his fathers occupation!!

Thanks to both of you for looking.
