what regiment is this?
« on: Wednesday 19 October 05 22:06 BST (UK) »
Just looking into the other half's family history and we've just snaffled a big box of photographs off of her Mum. In the box is a rather fine looking fella but his photo is in poorly shape  :(

We've no idea who he is unfortunately but the photo is old and the colour looks to have been added post photo.

I've scanned it at 300dpi.

Any ideas anyone?

Okay Mack
I have respect for your military knowledge, but for a poor old pleb like me Edinborough is the home of "The Royal Scots -WHAT".
I'm not being pedantic but c'mon please, if you have a few minutes to spare give us some more info'
                                                      Thanks

The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) was and may still be the senior, if it still exists, the senior Regiment of Infantry in the British Army. I no longer have my uniform reference books. This pic. comes from pre 1914. It's the last red uniform before khaki. I thought 'Royal' regiments had blue 'facings', ie collar and cuffs.  I will do a Google and see what I come up with.

I don't think your pic. is Royal Scots. They had red and white diced band round forage caps and wore trew's. It's the white 'facings' that matter. I have done a Google but can't find it.

I used to know these things much better, but the hobby has lapsed.

I would have thought he was a Regular, but maybe not.

I seem to remember English Regiments had white collar and cuffs, Scottish yellow, Welsh green? and I can't remember the Irish colour although it should have been green.

Good point about Scottish connections to English Regiments.

Hi Spook,
I had a look at the photo and the cap badge looks as if it contains the Irish Harp, try looking up Irish regiments, it might be worth a go.
