Scotts Common
« on: Thursday 20 October 05 15:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
One of my rellies gives Scotts Common Oxfordshire as his place of birth- circa 1785.

Can anyone point me as to where this is as I cant find any reference online other than in an excerpt from a novel

"George Moore, a shoemaker, with a shock head of black hair, a new wife, half a hundred of leather, and two sovereigns, came over from Ewelme to Ipsden, and applied to my father for a cottage on Scott's Common. "

Thanks

Carol

Hi
You could try going to South Oxfordshire Online; the planning dept might possibly know of old Ordnance Survey maps 6 '' to 1 mile, maybe old rights of way maps etc, or those which show village greens and common land, which could show the place you're interested in.
Good luck,

I believe it is near Checkendon which is a few miles NNW of Reading but in Oxfordshire because it is north of the river Thames.

It's worth bearing in mind that a transcription and index of the South Stoke parish registers are available on CD from Oxfordshire FHS.
