Old pubs
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 21:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone out there knows of any website that covers the history of Nottingham pubs?
My GGrandad used to own the Norfolk Hotel on London Road, and I want to try and find out a little more about it when he would have owned it, which I'm thinking must have been around 1914-1944.
It's near Crocus Street, but the current address is London Road. I have found details of a "Crocus Inn" but don't know if it's the same place?

Try looking in the Trade Directories. The central library should have several and there are also some on line at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/.

These won't give you the history, but they will tell you who was there.

Hi Burto

It was the Norfolk Hotel in 1913-14, 1915-16 (Wrights Directories) occupied by Mrs Lily Faulkner. It is still called the Norfolk Hotel at 68 London Road. I cannot find a local website with information about it.

Maybe you can write to the landlord or phone them to find the Brewery and then contact them.

Phone number of the Norfolk Hotel 0115 985 0327

Hi,
Thanks for that.  My Granddad drove a horse and cart delivering beer barrels at the age of 14 so that would been in 1928. Does anyone know if there are any trade directories for that year, either online or at the archives in Nottingham?

Hi Jane,
Thank you so much for that! At least it confirms that he did own it for a time!!!!
Did these directories only come out every four years, or were they the only ones available at the archives?

Hi Burto

They were on microfiche at the archives. They seemed to be the only ones in the 1900s. If you want me to investigate further I will next time I go.

Hi Burto

No trouble, I go there quite often. It makes a change from doing mine.
