Census of Westham Inhabitants in 1751

taken by the Rev. John Nicholl

In July 1751, after only being in the parish of Westham for some 4 months, the Rev John Nicholl set about recording, house by house, details of all his parishoners.

Rev. John Nicholl was systamatic in the way he recorded the information:-

Leaving the vicaridge, he set off down the High Street on the Northern side, crossing the road and returning to vicaridge on Southern side, then to the Almeshouses. Crossing the marsh road to the South West he turned left to Langney, took the road Northwards to Friday Street and at Stone Cross he noted Red Ditch with Dittons to the West. Retracing his steps a little he must have turned North up the road to Priesthaws and Glyneigh, before crossing the fields to reach Hornes and Rickney, from wich the road ran south through the most populated part of the village, Hankham Street and further south still to Blacknests and Peeling Farm.

The original documents are deposited in Glamorgan Record Office, Cardiff, but photocopies are available in the East Sussex Record Office, Lewes. (AMS 5755)
