Halton Barracks
Hastings was as early as 1778 a Military Station, with an encampment on Fairlight Down, and as the 19th century was opening a considerable body of troops was stationed at Hastings, Battle, Bexhill and Fairlight: (Hastings of Bygone Days and the present, Henry Cousins, page 113)
Later in 1795, 30 Acres of the Gallows Field at the Mount Road end of Halton was sold to the government to build a barracks, these being first occupied in 1804.
In 1823 the Halton barracks were sold for a quarter of their cost to Boykett Breeds and Co. who demolished them, thus making way for the development of Halton: (History of Ore, History Workshop)
Priory Road was formerly called Barrack Road: (Hastings of Bygone Days and the present, Henry Cousins, page 258)
Theatre in the upper room of the Hare & Hounds Inn, Ore, (Inn described as having a theatre on side and tea gardens on the other) was for many years a favourite rendezvous for visitors and the officers and soldiers from the Halton Barracks:(page 91) St Clements Caves were a popular resort of the soldiers from Halton Barracks, for card playing and other games: (Hastings of Bygone Days and the present, Henry Cousins, page 170)
“Immediately adjoining the Turnpike Gate is the ground which was formerly occupied by the Barracks, but on which a Town of considerable size, extending a quarter of a mile, has been erected within a short period. The greater part of these houses are of a small description, and are inhabited by the lower classes. The houses which were built on the derelict land adjoining the Sea, in the parish of Holy Trinity, have been pulled down, and the inhabitants have removed to the Barrack Ground, which will partly account for the great increase in that quarter”: (Report upon the proposed Municipal Boundary and Division into Wards of the Town & Port of Hastings c.1840)
Temporary barracks, held about 200 of the soldiers quartered here during the Napoleonic wars at Bo-Peep destroyed by fire in 1804 - (SWA) - Feb. 27th 1804) lighted soot set light to the thatched roofs.
