Technical Help / Re: Netgear NAS
« on: Tuesday 02 January 24 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the suggestions.   As I expected, I already have the network settings as detailed.   When trying to map a network drive, a dialogue box requiring a password comes up - its not the one I use for the NAS, or the one that is used for Windows.

I think I am going to go down the route of another manufacturer, but that can wait a while as I can still use it via its web interface.

Thanks anyway.

I would tend to agree with Biggles50 as a longer term solution once you have all the files backed up safely  :)

Yes, backed up to three different locations.  I’m going to have a bit more of a delve tomorrow when I have access and try the suggestions.

If you can see the NAS in File Explorer, can you find any clues as to what's going on by looking at Properties? Or Device Settings? My instinct is to disconnect it and then reconnect. Presumably you can't even do a backup of what's on there?

Netgear aren't interested I suppose?

Neither Properties or Device Settings are available.   Right Click just gives me a dialogue box asking for my password.   Netgear have basically washed their hands of NAS products :(

Technical Help / Netgear NAS
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
This is pretty obscure and I suspect only one of the "techie" people may be able to offer a clue:

I've run a Netgear NAS for may years without any problems.   Earlier this year, Netgear announced they were withdrawing ReadyCloud (their remote access utility) but access to the NAS as a plug and play device on a local network would continue.   This was a bit annoying as I liked to be able to access the NAS when away - but Hey Ho!

ReadyCloud was duly retired and at the same time I lost access to the device as a plug and play device.   This has been very annoying as I had several folders mapped as virtual drives.   I can now only use the NAS by accessing it via my browser using it's IP address on my network which is less than ideal.  If I look at my network using File Explorer I can see the NAS but am unable to access it.

I'd really like to get it's full functionality back, so any pointers would be gratefully received.

Technical Help / Re: What can we do about this phone problem?
« on: Wednesday 21 June 23 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all for your input.

I had found the Samsung support thread, and similar, but the advice didn’t solve the problem.

It could well be to do with a local phone mast, so it looks as if we need to contact the network provider.  First however, we’re going to lend our friend a phone to find out whether or not the problem still occurs when using it.

Discontinuation of landlines is a worry when Scotland has a lot of areas where mobile reception is poor or non-existent.

Landlines are not being discontinued.   They will still be provided but using fibre optics rather than copper wires.  There are all kinds of other problems that this change could potentially bring but that's not for this thread.

It could be all manner of things.   I would suggest a first attempt should be made by contacting your telephony provider and discussing the problem.   From an engineering standpoint, its one of the worst types of report to get - Intermittent!   I have a feeling that they will likely say they can find nothing wrong.   It's worth a try though.

To be honest, I have had exactly the same thing and because of my background in telecoms, I actually proved the fault to one mobile aerial over a period of time - getting the mobile company to investigate was quite another thing.

Also it sounds like there are two distinct and separate faults - the incoming to your phone and the incoming to your friend's mobile.  Your friend's incoming call problem is something they will need to discuss with their provider i'm afraid.

Oxfordshire / Re: Grove Camp/Hostel, Grove, Wantage.

Thank you Nanny Jan and Youngtug for your suggestions.  I’ll probably try the Oxfordshire county archives.   I now know that in 1946 the base was returned  by USAAF to the RAF, and transferred in 1955 to UK Atomic Energy Authority.  Several relatives are listed on electoral rolls for late 40s/early 50s as living at the camp - I wanted to know what it was used for then.
Thanks for your help.
From Wikipedia:

RAF Grove was returned to the RAF in 1946. After the war, the airfield was used for surplus aircraft disposal. In 1953, the RAF 431 Equipment Depot serving the 2nd Tactical air force in Germany was transferred from Hamburg to Grove.
