Australia / Kate Leahy
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 17:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

I am having great success, thanks to you all at Rootschat, in finding information so here I go with another mystery person.

Kate Leahy married George Manning Rees in Ballarat in 1867.

She says that her age was 21 and that she was born in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria.  She also says that her parents are John Leahy, Gardiner and Mary Leahy nee Morgan.
She could write her own name.
At the time of her marriage she statesthat she is living at an address in Ballarat but as often happens this is the same address as George.  It is 10 Ligar(I think) Street.
I know all about George and his family because he came from Wales but as for Kate.  She is a mystery.  She was born in 1846 and I guess that at that time Richmond was a fairly new place.  In fact I don't eve nthink Victoria was a separate state then.
Anyway this is all I know about Kate and her parents - I can't even find them in the Victorian bmd but then maybe I am not looking properly.  I sure could use your help on this.

Cheers

Australia / William Henry Harris
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,  :)

I am trying to find the emigration record for this man, from England to Australia.

He moved to Australia some time between 1871 and 1891.

He came with his son Walter.  Walter married in 1891 at St Ignatius Church Richmond and he says on the wedding certificate that he was born in London.  This occurred around 1871.  William Henry meanwhile says he is living in Toorak.  He is a Grainer by profession (as is Walter) and this means that their job was to paint wood so that it looked like another, more exotic type of wood, for the furniture trade.

Possibly William Henry's wife, Charlotte Sarah Harris, came as well although she may have died prior to the family leaving England.  There may also have been a sister called Abigail but on this I am not sure.

I have tried looking at various website but to no avail and as I do not live in Australia I cannot easily go and check.  I am presuming that the Harris family made straight for Melbourne but I guess they need not have. . .

Is anyone able to assist me?
Cheers

London and Middlesex / Sanders FORD & Ruth Ann VANT
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 12:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

I have a family tree problem that I just cannot seem to work out!  :-[

I already wrote about Sanders Ford and someone pointed out the fact that I could find more info by getting his second marriage certificate which I now have but all Sanders says is that his father is John Ford, farmer.
Now I should point out that the Fords were a rather secretive bunch.  There is a rumour that they came from overseas and I always thought it was Sander's son John Sanders Ford who was the one but investigation soon revealed that it was his father Sanders/Saunders who might be the one.
The Fords were often evasive and seem to have hidden their tracks well.
What I do know is that Sanders Ford seems to have been born at sea in about 1812. 'On the seas' he always says.
He was a policeman for a time and I checked the records which showed that he was recommended for the position by a chap in Chatham.
In 1851 Sanders's wife Ruth aka Ann (nee Vant according to John Saunders Ford birth certificate) says she was born in Chatham.  I can find no record of a marriage certificate for them in the early BMD registers 1837 to 1850. . .  I would say that given Ruth's age they had to have married after 1837
In 1841 Sanders and Ann aka Ruth were together if not married and there was a child Julia but while I find Sanders living at the police station in Westminster with all the other PCS Ruth aka Ann and Julia are nowhere.  They say in 1851 that Julia was born in Herts which seems rather odd but I see no reason to doubt it.
There is no mention of Ruth Vant or Ann Vant or Ruth Ann Vant on the IGI although that is not conclusive proof and I cannot find her baptism in the Chatham parish records.
The Fords were somehow linked with the Rodriguez family - I name I heard my late father talk of and it is possible that Julia married a chap called Rodriguez.
What I want to find is the origins, the parents of Sanders and Ruth.  It is proving most difficult.  I wondered id Ruth is with her parents in 1841 but I cannot find anyone fitting the description and  the Vant family is fairly well represented in Kent.
I should point out that it is said that the Ford family origins are Jewish and possibly German or the Baltic States but once again the waters are murky.
It is a curly problem and perhaps there is no answer to it but it is worth asking if anyone can help, make suggestions or perhaps has access to something they could look up and see if either of these two people appear in them?  :-\

Europe / Sanders Ford - mystery man
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 19:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

here is a mystery that I cannot work out and as a problem shared is a problem halved I shall share it with you...

My ancestor was a man called Sanders Ford.  He says he was born in 1812 - and he died in 1864.  He says he was born 'on the seas'.

He was married to Ruth Vant who said she was born in Chatham.  In the 1841 census he is listed as a policeman.  I checked the police records at the PRO while in London the other week and found that he had a reference from a man who lived in Chatham named Capt. Sandham, of Brompton, Chatham which is as I understand it, near the Docks and I believe there was an army barracks there.

In 1851 and in 1861 Sanders (or Saunders as he sometimes called himself) still says that he was born 'on the seas' so I presume he is right and that perhaps his family were on their way to England at the time of his birth.  This is just a guess.

Family stories about about the so called Ford family and all seem to indicate that he was a foreigner who chose the name Sanders Ford because it sounded English, but no one says or knows from where he came.
I just don't know where to look and it seems to me to be rather hopeless.  I was pinning my hopes on police records giving family details but - no.  They only say that he was dismissed  :o probably because I suspect he was already married to Ruth.

Can anyone help?  I hope so.  I don't want old Sanders to be a mystery forever and in 1841 I presume he has parents in England but how can I know who they are?

Cheers

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETED Thomas Owen Bishopsgate 1775
« on: Saturday 20 January 07 21:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

my ancestor Thomas Owen was born in Bishopsgate on 11 November 1775 and baptised at St Botolph Without Aldersgate on the 1st of December.  His parents were William and Mary.
I am wondering (and hoping) if the actual baptismal register gives more information on the parents, such as possible address or occupation of father.
Thomas, who died in 1851, was an historical engraver by profession and I am hoping that his father was too.
Is anyone able to look this up for me?
I live in Germany for work at the moment so it is difficult to hop on a bus and go into London these days  ;)

Cheers and thanks

Australia / James Stanley - Tasmania
« on: Saturday 20 January 07 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo Rootschat people,

I am looking for information on a chap named James Stanley (my partner's great grandfather) who may or may nor have been an emigrant from England.  He married Grace Presnell in I guess about the 1900s and probably in Launceston but I can get no info.
I know that Grace Presnell lived 1886 to 1983 and that the family moved to Melbourne some time prior to the 1930s. . .
I don't think that James had a middle name so it is hard to find him when there are countless James Stanleys out there.
I cannot get to any Victorian/Tasmanian records places as I work in Germany at the present time.
Is anyone able to help or give advice?

Cheers

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / The elusive Joseph Fallowfield (d1770)
« on: Thursday 18 January 07 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

there once was a man named Joseph Fallowfield.  A husbandman living in Holme upon Spalding Moor.
He was married to Ann X and had (at least) three sons:
Thomas 1735 - my ancestor
Christopher 1736 (a bit of a wild one)
Joseph 1742

Old Joseph was buried in 1770.
So far so good but the question is who were his parents? and where was he born?
I am presuming his father was Thomas because that is what he named his eldest son but I cannot find Joseph's in the registers that I have had access to and niether can I find a marriage for him.

Various theories abound but I am yet to find a baptism record for a Joseph Fallowfield sometimes around 1715 and up to ten years before in the area.  The Fallowfields were based in Pocklington before spreading throughout much of the East Ridings.  Is anyone able to help or offer ideas?

Regards

Kirk

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Transportation look up - FALLOWFIELD
« on: Thursday 18 January 07 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,

this is my first post!  :)

Following the instructions on another posting in this section I am starting this new topic.
I beleive that Mordecai Fallowfield aka Mordecai Dunn was transported for a period of time to Australia although he later returned to England.  I 'think' that it was in the 1800s or possibly earlier.  Is someone able to look this up please.

Thank you

Kirk

PS
I posted this in the wrong spot didn't I . . .    :'(
