Now I've found my Gtx4 Grandmother's father (Charles Rossi) with lots of help from the brilliant RootsChatters, I'd like to try and find her husband's father!

I know quite a bit about my Gtx4 Grandfather - Edward Clifford, born approx 1797 in St Georges, Hannover Square, London. Married Sarah Rossi. He died in 1882.  I have him in all the censuses up 'til his death.

An uncle once told me that Edward's father's name was  Charles Edward (this was also Edward's son's name, so maybe he'd got muddled....!) - but as this uncle has gone to sit on his branch of the great family tree in the sky, I can't ask him how he knew!

He also said that Edward had a brother, John - and I have found a John Clifford (born 1798 in St George, London) who would seem to fit the bill - I have him in all the censuses except 1861 where I cannot find him or any of his family. In 1851 they were living in Westminster, Palace Street.  He was married to Martha something.  He died before 1871, as he is not in that census and Martha is given as "Widow".  (As I have a copy of Edward's will, I know he did indeed have a brother, as he is mentioned, but no name given).

I have had a hunt around, to see if I can find Edward and John's father, but cannot find anything.......so would be very grateful for any help.

Many thanks for any ideas

Please could anyone tell me whether the above churchyard still exists?

One of my ancestors, John Charles Felix Rossi (died on 21 February 1839 ), was apparently buried there and I would like to know whether there is any trace of him!......

Many thanks

Help please!!  I am trying to find the parents of my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents..... He was Edward Clifford, born abt. 1796, died 1882 aged 86. She was Sarah Rossi, born abt. 1798, in Marylebone,  died 1874 aged 75.

On IGI, I have found a Chas. Rossi married to a Mary who had a daughter, Sarah - born 1798, christened in St Mary's, Marylebone 24 Feb 1799.  The dates for Sarah fit mine, but what is the best way of making sure - if there is a way?

And then, if and when I confirm they were her parents, how do I go about going back another generation?

Family "legend" has it, that the Rossi of the family was a sculptor - I have Googled and found a John Charles Felix Rossi (or simply Charles Rossi), who was indeed a sculptor, and the dates seem to fit. His father was an Italian doctor. He apparently had two wives and sixteen children - I'd like to imagine one of them was Sarah! But it is rather a longshot.......

As you can see, I'm in a knot - what should I do to unravel myself?! ::)

Many thanks for any help

Australia / Lewis Rossi Hardy - part 2!!
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 13:01 BST (UK)  »
I have, with a LOT of help from New Zealand Rootschatters, been finding out about one of my ancestors, Lewis Rossi Hardy. I won't repeat it all here, but if you're interested, have a look at the NZ thread!........... :)  However - I have just been told about ANOTHER Lewis Rossi Hardy who served in the Royal Navy - which got me a bit worried as I thought it might mean all our hunting had lead to the wrong man. But this doesn't seem to be the case - "my" Lewis is well and truly buried in New Zealand.

I thought that the name Lewis Rossi Hardy was unusual and was surprised to find another one - so I'd like to know a bit more about the Australian one, in case there is a link somewhere.  All I know is :

Lewis Rossi Hardy, born 10th October 1870 in Sydney, NSW, Labourer. Served for twelve years from 10 August 1895 to 21 June 1897 when he bought his way out.  He was then serving on the Victory 2.

I would be interested to know his parents' names and if possible his place and date of death.

It could be, of course, that his middle name has been misread and that it doesn't say Rossi at all....

Many thanks for any info anyone can let me have.

I am looking for information about Edward Charles Clifford. He lived from 1858 - 1910 and was an artist. He was also, apparently, Principal of the Berry Art School.   I have tried to find the art school on the net, but no luck - has anyone heard of it?

I have managed to find a couple of his paintings, but no more information about the man himself - other than the censuses except for 1891. In the 1901 census he is living at 43 Bath Road, Bedford Park and is shown as an "Artist and Art Teacher", married to Annie, daughter Ethel.

Does anyone know of a site where I could find any more info about him? I've tried everything I can think of!

Many thanks for any help.

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Grattan Stinson Hardy - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 26 August 07 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the death of Grattan Stinson Hardy - born 1861 in Kensington, London.  I have him in the UK censuses up to and including 1901, but no sign of a death!  He was the son of Julia Clifford and George Hardy. In the censuses he is either a tailor or "living on his own means".  He had two brothers, one of whom Lewis Rossi Hardy emigrated to New Zealand and died there. I cannot find Grattan in NZ.  The other brother Dudley Clifford Hardy died in Portsea.

I think he MIGHT have emmigrated to Canada - I would be very grateful if someone could do a look-up for me.

I thought that with such an odd name he would be easy to find - but no!

Many thanks for any help

New Zealand Completed Requests / Lewis Rossi Hardy COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 25 August 07 14:41 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information about Lewis Rossi Hardy.  He was born in England (London) in abt 1860.  In the 1881 census there is a Lewis R Hardy living in Whitehaven and listed as "comedian actor".  I cannot find him in any later censuses in England. However, I have found a Lewis Rossi Hardy buried in the O'Neills Point Cemetery, King Edward Avenue, Bayswater, New Zealand (on the nscc.govt.nz site), buried 19th June 1910.

He probably married either an Anna Isabella Aykbourne or a Blanche Eliza Johnson (FreeBMD 2b/ 786).

I suppose that he would have emigrated to New Zealand after his marriage in 1883.

I should be very grateful for any information - it's the first time I have found a family member who might have lived so far away!

Many thanks.
