Durham Lookup Requests / Lost at sea
« on: Monday 17 September 07 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found through the GRO Death index a Matthew LEGG registered Hartlepool Mar 1915: age at death 45-50.

I think this may mean he died at sea, but not sure.  I have a Matthew LEGG born 1873 who may fit the bill, as he was a fisherman in Scotland on 1901 census.

If anyone has ever had to look at a death certificate of someone lost at sea, could you please tell me what kind  of info I may get from purchasing a certificate?  Obviously, a date of birth wouldn't be there.

Would the cert say which vessel he was on?  would it say which port he sailed from?

I must admit, I'm at a loss.  He's my first 'Lost at sea'.

All ideas gratefully accepted  :)

Regards,

Trini.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Fishing accident?
« on: Wednesday 22 August 07 12:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My ancestor, Matthew LEGG is listed in Aberdeen on the 1901 census as a fisherman.

A friend recently went to the Record Office in Edinburgh to locate his death and there isn't one.

If he died at sea, in a fishing accident, would there be any records anywhere?

Thanks,

Trini.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1891 census lookup
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 11:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have Matthew LEGG b. 1873 North Shields on the 1881 census (North Shields) and then the 1901 Census (Aberdeen).

I can't seem to find him on the 1891 census anywhere.

It's possible he was either a fisherman (1901 census) or a merchant seaman (Marriage, Scotland, 1899).

If anyone can help with ideas on where to look next, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Trini.

Aberdeenshire Lookup Requests / Been trying to find him for ages.......!
« on: Sunday 24 June 07 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

My Great Grans brother, Matthew LEGG, born North Shields 1873.    Well, after the 1881 census, seems like he dropped off the earth.

Now,  I have found on the Scottish census index, a Matthew LEGG, Born North Shields about 1874, aged 27, Fisherman.
Registration district St. Nicholas, Aberdeen John Knox.  47 1/2 Hutcheon Street.

Would anyone be able to furnish me with further details of the census page (can you do that in Scotland, or does it cost?)

I'd also be interested in any marriage of said man, as I have found absolutely nothing here.  Apparently, his father was a tyrant, and a couple of the kids ran away from home.....

Great if anyone can help or has any ideas to further my quest.

Thank you

Trini.

Hi

Can't seem to find my Great Gran on the 1881 census, so wondered if any detectives out there could help?

Great Gran was Elizabeth ALLISON, born 1877/8 according to her marriage cert in 1896 which states she was 19, her father was John ALLISON.

1891 census:  RG12/4093/27/20:

John ALLISON, Head, M. 40, Coal Miner b. Durham, Blaydon
Sarah ALLISON, wife, M. 40 b. Durham, Pittington
Mary Ann ALLISON, daur. 15, b. Northumberland, Backworth
Susannah ALLISON, daur. 15, b.           ditto
Elizabeth A. ALLISON, daur, 13 b. Durham, Willington
John W. ALLISON, son, 6, scholar, b. NBL, Killingworth
James R ALLISON, son, 3, b. NBL, Killingworth.

I just can't seem to find any of the family anywhere in 1881.

Thanks for reading this.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Elizabeth ALLISON
« on: Monday 04 June 07 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, just wondering if anyone out there with fresh eyes could help?

My Great Grandma, Elizabeth ALLISON................here's what I have:

Marriage cert (just came today!)

Elizabeth  Alice ALLISON, spinster, age 19, father John ALLISON (a machine man)
m
William WALTON, bachelor, 20, a mason, father Thomas WALTON (a Mason)

one of the witnesses was a James Edward ALLISON. (Brother, perhaps?)

I know where Elizabeth and William Walton are on the 1901 census (because my Grandma is with them), but am having difficulty finding Elizabeth Alice on the 1891 and 1881.

The 1901 states that she was born Winlaton.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Durham Lookup Requests / Thomas Walton 1871 lookup request.
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again!

On 1881 census I have the following:

RG11/4940/14/21:

Tow Law, Wolsingham:

Thomas Walton, Head, Mar, 28, Mason, b. Wolsingham
Frances, wife, Mar, 27, b. Black Boy Row
Mary Ann, daur, 9, Scholar, b. Tow LAw
Jane Cath, daur, 5, scholar, b. Tow LAw
William, son, 3, b. Tow Law
Robert, son, 1, b. Tow LAw.
-------------

I am trying to find Thomas WALTON on the 1871 census.  Finding it hard as Walton was a very common name in the area in those days.

Could anyone give me any clues?  I have already mistaken this Thomas for one who was related to wealthy farmers in the same area.

Thank you for your time.

Durham Lookup Requests / 1901 lookup..I can't find on Ancestry
« on: Thursday 23 November 06 22:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

On 1881 census (RG11/4939/58/8) I found my Anthony WALTON who is at Landieu Farm with his sister Isabella (both unmarried) and his mother Isabella.

On 1891 census ( RG12/4085/48/3), he is still unmarried, with his sister Isabella Now married with the surname DENT) and his niece and nephew (both DENT).

I've tried to find him on the 1901  census and can't, so I was wondering if anyone out there with tricks up their sleeves could help me out?

Is there a way to look up the farm.....Landieu, Wolsingham, Durham?  Looking at the census back to 1841, WALTON family always worked there.

Any help, gratefully received........    :) :) :)

Regards,

Trini.
