Australia / Tasmania: names of ships from UK to Tas Jun 1887-Feb 1888
« on: Monday 27 January 14 05:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a list of ships that sailed from UK via Tasmania to Melbourne. Only interested in ships that arrived in Tasmania Jun 1887 - Feb 1888.

The reason for these specific dates is that the JACK family I am researching were bound for Melbourne but did not reboard the ship when it left Tasmania for Melbourne.  Their child Louis JACK was born in Tasmania in Feb 1888.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Isle of Man / Beale Veare - where is this?
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 00:01 GMT (UK)  »
On IOM iMuseum, one of the registered deeds for Godfrey TATE (died 1851) has the following text:
Assignment:Godfrey TATE by William QUIGGIN, Trustee to Sophia TATE,  Joseph TRAYLER and Thomas KELLY. Beale Veare in parishes of Arbory and Rushen

In Manxnotebook, Bealevear is defined as "entrance of the road"

What and where is/are the Beale Veare referred to in registered deed?

Occupation Interests / Merchant ship NORTHFLEET 1855-6
« on: Sunday 14 July 13 05:38 BST (UK)  »
I would like to know the dates of the Northfleet's voyages to China in 1856

I know that one voyage left England abt 17 Mar 1856 & arrived Whampoa (Shanghai)  abt 10 Jun 1856

Was this NORTHFLEET's first voyage to China?

I am researching Joseph Spence EVISON who was midshipman on the Mar-Jun voyage.  His log for that voyage is held in British National Archives PRO 30/26/10.  He was 13 years old.

Any information about the NORTHFLEET in 1856 would be appreciated

Somerset / BLACKWELL parish register - WOOKEY Benjamin birth c 1803-9
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 03:14 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Benjamin WOOKEY who married in Tasmania in 1840 aged 31 and died there in 1854 aged 50 ie born c 1803 - 1809.

Some online family trees have the following information about his birth, but the source is not  recorded:
Born  Blackwell, Somerset 7 Feb 1803
Parents Walter WOOKEY & Mary WOOLEN

On FamilySearch there are several children recorded for Walter & Mary WOOKEY but not one called Benjamin

Does Benjamin WOOKEY appear in Parish birth records for Blackwell?

Australia / WOOKEY Benjamin - birth place and date. Died Tasmania 1853
« on: Monday 03 June 13 09:07 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to get information about the birth date/place for Benjamin WOOKEY
What I already know about him:

From his marriage transcript:
16 Mar 1840 New Norfolk Tasmania Church of England rites
Benjamin WOOKEY, 31, farmer, batchelor
Phoebe ROBINSON [nee LAWTON] 24, widow
This gives a birth date of 1809

From his death transcript [New Norfolk Tasmania]
16 Mar 1853
Benjamin WOOKEY, 50, licensed victualler, inflammation of the lungs, informant Elizabeth SHAW friend
This gives a birth date of 1803

Some online family trees suggest that he was born in Tasmania but I can't find evidence of that.
Nor can I find evidence that he relocated from Norfolk Island.

Any information about Benjamin WOOKEY before his marriage in 1840 would be much appreciated

Australia / LAWTON William convict to Tasmania 1819 ship Dromedary
« on: Tuesday 28 May 13 05:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for the following details for William LAWTON, convict, 1819, ship DROMEDARY:
What was his crime?
Did his wife Sarah LAWTON nee WHITBY go to Australia?
When did his daughter Phoebe LAWTON arrive in Tasmania?

What I already know:
William LAWTON (Northamptonshire) was transported for life to Tasmania in 1819 on the DROMEDARY
He died in New Norfolk Tasmania in 1849

Before transportation he married Sarah WHITBY in 1815 in Northamptonshire
Their daughter Phoebe LAWTON was born in 1817

Sarah petitioned to go to Australia with her husband.  I can't find any evidence that she was successful, however their daughter Phoebe did arrive in Tasmania sometime before 1837 when her daughter Elizabeth Sarah Mary Lawton ROBINSON was born

William LAWTON married his 2nd wife Elizabeth O'BRIEN/O'BRIAN in 1828 in Tasmania.
He was eventually pardoned and owned the Wheatsheaf Inn in New Norfolk.  In his will he left the inn to his daughter Phoebe

Phoebe LAWTON married 3 times in Tasmania - ROBINSON, WOOKEY, EXCELL

Any help with my three questions would be appreciated

Australia / JACK Charles Douglas arrival Tasmania 1886-89
« on: Friday 24 May 13 10:44 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the arrival of Charles Douglas JACK (born England c 1858) in Tasmania about 1887.

He was probably accompanied by his wife Alice Rachel nee FORSEY (born 1860) and two children William Douglas (born 1882) and Beatrice (born 1885).
Their son Alexander JACK died in England Jun Q 1886 and their son Louis JACK was born in Tasmania in 1889.

This leaves a fairly small window for their arrival
Mid-1886 - Dec 1889

But I can't find them.  Tried to find them on Victorian passenger list but no luck there
