Roxburghshire / DAVIDSON & LECK, Sprouston & Lempitlaw 17/1800s
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 10:31 BST (UK)  »
hi folks  :)
I'm researching my DAVIDSONS from Sprouston & Lempitlaw and wonder if anyone else out there has any connection with them or any info that might help me trace some of them.

James DAVIDSON b.c.Dec1782; d.18 Jan 1841 [58yrs] Lempitlaw
m. bef.1813 not found yet - more than likely a Secession Church marriage judging by their kids' christenings
Janet LECK/LECH b.c.1796; d.7 Mar 1839 [42yrs] Lempitlaw
kids:
Margaret b.30 May 1813 Lempitlaw
Henry b.11 Nov 1814
Thomas b.19 Aug 1816 Lempitlaw; d.12 Aug 1887 NBL
Isabella b.20 Jun 1818 Lempitlaw
James b.20 Mar 1820 Lempitlaw
Walter b.9 Mar 1822 Lempitlaw
Robert b.10 or 16 Aug 1824 Lempitlaw
Janet b.6 Oct 1828 Lempitlaw
Nancy Leck Davidson b.17 Nov 1828 Lempitlaw
Andrew b.5 Mar 1831
Helen b.29 Jan 1833; d.28 Jun 1845 [12yrs] Lempitlaw
William b.c.1836
Mary b.c.1838

in the 1841 Sprouston census, Vol.807 ED:5; Folio 5, pg.5, the family is headed by dau Margaret whose occ. was 'Ind.'
The return incl. an Elizabeth b.c.1830 but she may be a niece as in the 1851
Missing from the 1841 are Isabella, James & Rbt   :(
Thomas is in NBL

By the 1851, most of the family have evaporated, and although I know Thomas has become a Doctor practicing in NBL, the only family that appears to be left in Sprouston are Andrew & sister Mary and niece Elizabeth.
Sprouston Vol.807 Pg.11; sch. no.42

Missing from the 1851 are Henry, Walter, Robert, Janet, Nancy, Isabella, James & William :(  though I appreciate there is a good chance at least some of the girls are married therefore hidden

Most of the kids were chr. in Gateshaw Associate Session, Morebattle, ROX, some dupliacted in the IGI are simply down as Sprouston, so perhaps those came from Kirk records

I suspect that dad, James, b. Lempitlaw, may be the son of Henry DAVIDSON & Isobell HALLIWELL

And possibly mum, Janet, the dau of Thomas LECK & Margaret MIDDLEMAST

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who can fill in any gaps or verify any of the foregoing

Armed Forces / The Scottish War Memorials Forum
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 08:40 BST (UK)  »
"A forum to showcase and discuss the many War Memorials of Scotland"

I've had a good look at it, the members are doing a great job of listing all the War memorials + photos.  some are being transcribed.  for folk looking for those who died in either WW1 or 2, this forum could well be a great help.

England / Died in Kobe, Japan! :-(
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
hi Listers,
i'm hoping someone amongst you can help me track down where to apply for my grt grandad's death lines.

he died while on a visit to the east - searching i believe, for sources of timber.

a local newpaper account records his death as:
10 February 1909 Kobe Harbour, Japan

 i found his death registration:

CONSULAR DEATH INDICES 1906-1910
Joseph Applyard, Vol.12 Kobe consulate pg.1589.   :)

however, i haven't been able to find Kobe Consulate.  perhaps it doesn't exist any more.

i've tried looking for records relating to deaths in Japan at national archives but haven't had much luck.  :-\

anyone got any pointers please,

thankyou for your time and trouble

« on: Monday 05 February 07 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
hi folks,
thanks to this link:
http://www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/asp/cemeteries/search.asp
i've found my grt grandad's grave - it's been a long search  :)

i've a couple of questions relating to it
1. are there any photographs of the cemetery?
2. why have i got 2 returns here?  is the neighbouring grave likely to contain an unbaptised baby - since thereis no given name? or, could  one plot be empty but bought against the time when my grt grandma would be needing it.
in the end, she returned to Britain with her kids.
3. who would i write to in order to find out if there is a headstone/s and what might remain to be seen on it/them?

here's the info. i'd be very greatful for some guidance if anyone on the list is familiar with this cemetery:

Fife / What Fife Militia were there c.1840?
« on: Monday 11 December 06 01:42 GMT (UK)  »
hi Listers,
I've been pondering the wording on an inheritance claim and wonder if it suggests the person might have died as a result of some activities on the part of the local Militia.

The claim, not made until 1846, though the father died in 1840, was by the son, Fife born John Lumsden then living and farming in Mousen NBL for his dad's property, 'Lumsden's Farm' in Beath.   I found the doc in Services of Heirs.

The curious wording*, in translation from the Latin, is as follows:
"...that the former John Lumsden, farmer at Netherbeath in the sheriffdom of Fife, the father of John Lumsden, farmer at Mousen, NBL, and bearer of the present case, his eldest son by birth, *died for the royal faith and peace*;..."

To me, it suggests to me that his death was brought about in some way connected with defending the realm or some such.  If he'd been a soldier I'd have understood but he was quite definitely a farmer. That's why i was wondering about the Militia.  Does anyone know if there was any kind of insurrection, radical or whatever around 1840 and if there was a standing Militia at that time?  i have looked up http://regiments.org/ and it's an excellent reference but i cannot find anything that applies to this particular time slot in Fife.   I've also tried National Archives at Kew's website for WO records to no account.   :-\

Does anyone know of there are any Militia or Lieutenancy records from that period for Fife and where i might find them?

thanks a lot for your time  :)

Lancashire / 1838 Salford Lancs Lookup, please :-)
« on: Monday 27 November 06 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
hi follks,
Does anyone have access to a Lancs directory that covers Salford 1837-39?
I'm hoping my grt grt grandfather, Dr Thomas Davidson, may be listed.

According to the medical register he was in Salford Union before settliing in Belford NBL in 1839.  As he only qualified in 1837, there's only a narrow margin to catch him in.  It is possib;e that he may be listed as a Poor Law Officer or Surgeon as he did that in subsequent places he settled as well as being a local doctor.

i'd be very grateful for any search anyone can do on my behalf

thankyou for your time   :)

hi folks, i'm a bit stumped looking for my John PIPER.

we found him in the London & Edinburgh Gazettes where he'd been sent to prison for debts.

he's shown to be there in the 16 Jly & 19 Sep 1861 editions.  it looks as if perhaps he was in prison before those dates and that may be why we can't find him.
he's certainly not at home with his wife or kids.

his addresses before and after his well-deserved break in prisoon, were:
12 Belle Vue Villas, Seven sisters rd Holloway
and
7 Gafton rd, Seven sisters.

he was born in 1811 in YKS.  he was usually 'without employment' though for a brief period was a clerk for the rAilway.  but, being a bit of a layabout, possibly a scrounger even, he didn't involve himslef too often in anything as energetic as work.  :o

he prefered to be the young peacock about town wining and dining and spending everyone else's noney!  be that as it may, we'd quite like to find him.

can anyone help?

thasnk for your time   :)

Surrey / Beavis Baptisms, Banns & Burials 1800s
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 13:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, i'm researching my Beavis forebears and am wondering if anyone can help me out with baptism/banns/burial records/ registers &c

apart from the hard evidence, i'm hoping that there may be a few wee remarks in the PR's that don't show up on the IGIs that i've found for some members of the family

the family were mainly in Lambeth SRY but a few things happened in the City.. if i've got my geography right.

> marriage banns:
Wllm BEAVIS m. Ann NORTHCOTT  31 Mar 1823 St Pancras Old Church [IGI m047931-4461}
James BEAVIS m. Jane SALTER 6 February 1851 Parish Church, Bradninch, DEV; as James was from London, perhaps their banns would be read in London as well as DEV.  he was living at 18 Shoemaker Row, Blackfriars LON at the time

although it is a London marriage, according to the 1851 census, William is from Southampton and Ann is from Witheridge in Devon

> birth/bapt's:  parents William & Ann
BEAVIS Edwin Northcott |ch: 23 May 1825  | Christ Church, Southwark, London
BEAVIS James                 |ch. 26 Feb 1826   | Lambeth [IGI c042322-0468]
BEAVIS Maria Ann           |ch. 23 Mar 1828   | Lambeth
BEAVIS Alfred | b.c.1830|ch. 14 Sep 1834   | Lambeth
>>  ? another birth/bapt c.1832
BEAVIS Robert                |ch. 14 Sep 1834   | Lambeth [IGI c042322-5350]
>>  ? another birth/bapt c. 1837   an Ann maybe
BEAVIS Eliza                   |b.1839  Jun ¼ 1839 folio 4 pg270 | Lambeth

> death/burial:
BEAVIS, Maria Ann    | d. 24 Dec 1828 | Lambeth
BEAVIS, William      | d. Jun ¼ 1855   | Lambeth
BEAVIS, Ann      | d. Jun ¼ 1870   | Lambeth
BEAVIS, James     | d.13 Mar 1878   | Lambeth
BEAVIS, Jane     | d. Mar  ¼ 1889  | Lambeth

i'm afraid i haven’t a clue as to which cemetery they may have been buried in

1851 census supports the BMD dates reasonably well:
Lambeth HO107/ 1569 / 282 / 4 - Cornwall St, Lambeth
William BEAVIS | head | M | 57yrs | b. Southampton HAM  | cheesemonger
Ann           | wife | M | 47yrs | b. Witheridge DEV
Alfred           | son  | U  | 21yrs  | b. Lambeth SRY  | cheesemonger
Robert           | son  | U  | 16yrs  | b. Lambeth SRY  | cheesemonger
Eliza              | dau  | U  | 12yrs  | b. Lambeth SRY

London City HO107 / 1530/ 160 / 65  - 7½ Trinity Lane
Edwin BEAVIS | head | M | 25yrs | b. Lambeth SRY  | cheesemonger
with his wife Mary

St Ann Blackfriars HO107/ 1528 / 117 /10 - 18 Shoemaker Lane
James BEAVIS | head | M | 25yrs | b. Lambeth SRY |  cheesemonger
with his wife Jane

thanks for your time   :)
