Armed Forces / William Gourley c1830s-50s Army Record?
« on: Wednesday 29 July 15 12:51 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor named William Gourley/Gourlie who was a solider but I don't know his birth date or place or exactly when he served.  He was the father of George Gourley (perhaps James George Gourley originally) who was born c1838 at sea either from Glasgow to India or India to Glasgow.  His wife's name was Ann Johnston.  He was listed as a soldier and not deceased on George's 1858 Scottish marriage record and an Army Pensioner on George's 1884 death record by which time both he and Ann were listed as deceased also.

I can find no sign of George on the 1841 or 1851 census so it's possible William was serving in India or elsewhere at that time.  I also haven't located William and Ann on any census returns to try and narrow down when he served.  I'm just looking for any records at all that could pertain to his service to hopefully help me find out more about him and at the very least where he came from.

I have seen a few records of interest are on a site I don't have a subscription to so was just wondering if someone on here might kindly check for me.  There are a couple of service records but the dates seem quite late to be him and there's also a pension record that might be him.

Thanks for any help.

Scotland / George Gourley born at sea (1838)
« on: Wednesday 29 July 15 03:46 BST (UK)  »
I have a brick wall with a George Gourley/Gourlie born c1838 at sea between India and Glasgow.  From his marriage and death certificates I know his parents were William Gourley and Ann Johnston.  George got married on 31 Dec 1859 in Holytown, Lanarshire to Mary McMurdo and I have found him and their children on the 1861 (in Dalziel), 1871 (in Hamilton) and 1881 (in Shotts) census returns.  He died in 1884.  His age is consistent on those and his marriage and death.  His parents names are also consistent on both documents.  His father William is listed as a soldier on the marriage and an army pensioner on the death.

That's everything I know - I've tried to find him on the 1851 and 1861 census returns but turned up nothing.  I'm trying to find out about his parents and if he had siblings so I thought I'd ask on here and see if anyone can spot something I've missed.  Thank you!

Ayrshire / Catholic Baptisms c1860s Kilwinning/Kilmarnock
« on: Saturday 25 July 15 16:02 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could access catholic baptism registers for Kilwinning and Kilmarnock in Ayrshire for around the 1860s - I have the statutory births and I've searched Scotlands People's Catholic records but can't find the baptisms.  It's for a Patrick Lennan born 3 May 1860 at 46 Byrchill Row, Kilwinning to a Michael Lennan and Elizabeth Leonard and a Margaret Leonard Priestly born 28 May 1866 in Kilmarnock to John Priestly and Margaret Leonard.

Thanks for any pointers in the right direction.

Angus (Forfarshire) / William & Mary LEMAN Liff & Benvie, Angus
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 14:29 BST (UK)  »
I thought I might open this one up to fresh eyes as I'm struggling with it!

I came across the following 1901 Census return:

66 Taylors Lane, Liff & Benvie, St Peter, Angus
William LEMAN, Head, aged 59, born Dundee, General Labourer
Mary LEMAN, Wife, aged 42, born Calderbank
John CAMPBELL, Boarder, aged 7, born Newport, Fifeshire
Elizabeth CAMPBELL, Boarder, aged 5, born Newport, Fifeshire

I have been trying to find William LEMAN on prior census returns but with no success.  I guess his name may have been spelt wrongly/given wrongly in 1901 but I've tried a lot of variations and still can't find him.  I've also looked for a death for him to no avail.  I checked the 1895 and 1905 valuation rolls for Liff and Benvie too and found a William LEISHMAN but not LEMAN.

Additionally I've looked for a marriage between William and Mary as that is the record I really want to find but no joy.  Mary is my main interest here as I think she may be a very elusive ancestor of mine that has been a long-time mystery - a Mary KELLY born in the village of Faskine, Lanarkshire in 1858.  I know where she was up to 1879 and I have a possible census return for her in 1881 (although there is another Mary that could match too) but from there she is a mystery.

Faskine is very close to Calderbank and there is a Mary Kelly born Calderbank of the right age working in Liff and Benvie on the 1891 census that I speculatively think may be my Mary so finding a Mary born in Calderbank of the right age on the 1901 census seems like a good lead but I can't find anything more about this William and Mary to either prove or disprove my theory!  I've also looked for the death of a Mary LEMAN but can't find that either.

Any help from fresh eyes gratefully received!  Thanks.

« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 21:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone work out what this cause of death is?

It looks like "manasma" but that's obviously not right as I can't find any cause of death named that.

Thank you.

United States of America / Sarah Leonard Death Michigan 1969
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 19:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find death information for Sarah Leonard (nee Kelly) who was born 20 June 1884 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland and emigrated to the US in 1926.  Her husband Michael John Leonard died in June 1963 in Michigan as per the SSDI.  I have a note that Sarah died in Detroit in 1969 but I can't find anything to corroborate it.  I have found her on the 1930 and 1940 US Census returns living in Detroit and I know for sure she was alive in 1949 as I have found her travelling back to Detroit then.

Thanks for any help!

Antrim / MCMASTERS in Templepatrick, Antrim
« on: Monday 22 June 15 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone could help me verify an 1833 Co Antrim marriage.

I found an index online some time ago that told me James MCMASTER married Jane/Jean JAMIESON (maybe spelt JAMESON) on 12 Feb 1833 in Templepatrick Co Antrim.  I saw it on FamilySearch but I can't find it there now when searching for Irish marriages - it was a user submitted record though.  I may even have seen it on Ancestry too but I can't find it there either now.

Here is what I found previously:

JAMES MC MASTER married JANE JAMIESON 12 FEB 1833 Templepatrick, Antrim, Ireland
Messages: Form submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The form lists the submitter's name and address and may include source information. The address may be outdated. Details vary. To find the form, you must know the batch and sheet number.
   Source Information:
   Batch Number:    8806939
   Sheet:    25
   Source Call No.:    1553162

How can I get hold of the original record and corroborate this information?

I'm also looking for the birth records of any children they had in Templepatrick/Antrim.  I know they had at least these four children in Ireland:

William MCMASTER born c1834 (I have a note his date of birth may have been 1st Dec 1834 in Templepatrick with a christening on 5th Dec 1834)
Robert MCMASTER born c1836
Fanny MCMASTER born c1839 (I have a note that she was christened as Francess McMaster but I don't know where)
Alexander MCMASTER born c1842

Between Alexander's birth and the birth of their daughter Ann Jane in 1845 the family moved to Scotland and settled in Stirlingshire.

I think James MCMASTER was born in Antrim around 1813 and Jane JAMIESON around 1809.

Any help with this would be great - thank you!

Denbighshire / Death Notice North Denbighshire?
« on: Tuesday 17 February 15 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping to find a death notice for a man who died in Denbighshire North, Clwyd 14 years ago.  I don't have any idea what the local papers would be, where his family would be likely to place a notice or if these are searchable anywhere online.  I'm guessing they will probably be available at local libraries but as I am not in Wales I'm unsure of who to contact to ask for a lookup.  Any advice greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
