Yorkshire (West Riding) / Elizabeth Dobb, which is her baptism? late 1700's
« on: Friday 14 October 16 15:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have an Elizabeth Dobb who married a James Fletcher at Sheffield on 30 May 1814.
Elizabeth and James had several children ; Mary Ann, Joseph, Vincent, Catherine, James, Martha and Jane, all born between 1815 and 1829.

I'm trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Dobb. I've found a few possible baptisms;
1) bap 5 Jan 1794 at Rotherham, born 5 Dec 1793, daughter of Thomas and Martha.
2) bap 18 Jan 1789, Rotherham, born 18 Dec 1788, dau of John and Sarah.
3) bap 6 Aug 1786 at Whiston, born 4 Aug 1786, dau of John and Elizabeth.
(all these baptisms can be found in transcript form - no images - on An***try).

The only problem is, I have no idea which could be correct! Help with this would be greatly appreciated as I can't seem to trace any further back.

Many thanks for any help or advice,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sarah Barker, daughter of William Barker of Ulley
« on: Monday 26 September 16 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have a Sarah Barker, born approx.1856 in Ulley, with a father called William Barker (a labourer). Despite having these details, I'm struggling to locate Sarah on a census record with her parents, her baptism, and any of her siblings (these would be easier to trace with a baptism record for Sarah).

It would be a great help if someone could help me look for them, and it would be appreciated as always.
Thank you,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Trying to find parents of Mary HATTERSLEY, b.1865
« on: Monday 26 September 16 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have a Mary Hattersley, born approx. 1865 in Thorpe Hesley marrying Thomas Parkin (miner) at Thorpe Hesley on 1st Jul 1883.
On this marriage record, Mary's father is said to be Thomas Hattersley (who had an occupation which looks like horse nail maker).

Despite having a father's name, year and place of birth, I can't seem to find the baptism of Mary Hattersley. I would really appreciate some help finding it - this isn't my blood relative, but someone who is directly related to my Great Uncle; who I'm doing some research for (for his 86th birthday).

Many thanks as always for any help,
Holly

Northamptonshire / Edward KINGSTON, beerhouse Inn Keeper - finding his family, 1700's
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

While doing some research for a relative, I have come across an Edward Kingston, a beerhouse Inn Keeper from Northamptonshire. It is suggested on censuses that Edward was born about 1787 in Longthorpe, Northamptonshire (I don't know Northamptonshire very well at all, but I believe Longthorpe is near Peterborough?).

Edward married a woman called Mary, who was apparently born at Wentworth in Yorkshire around the year 1787 according to censuses.

Edward and Mary had at least 3 children, all baptized at Peterborough.
- Jarvis Kingston (who I'm also researching), bap 31 Jan 1813
- Edward Kingston, bap 14 Apr 1817
- John Kingston, bap 31 Jan 1813

What I have been trying to find out is;
- the identity of Mary, and her marriage to Edward Kingston
- any more children of Edward Kingston and Mary
- the baptism record and parents (and siblings) of Edward Kingston

If you feel you could help with any of these, I would be very appreciative of your help.
Many thanks,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Jarvis Carnelley - who were his family? 1700's
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 22:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,
I've come across a Jarvis Carnelley, father of Ann Carnelley (baptised at Wentworth in June 1784).
Jarvis married Sarah Pepper at Wentworth on 28 Jul 1783.
I've been trying to find a baptism record for Jarvis - I initially found one at Wath Upon Dearne on 27th May 1744 (where the name was Jervase Kernley, with a father with the same name), but that seemed a little early - and I actually found a marriage transcription on Familysearch that suggested that the birth date of Jarvis was 1761,and the birth date of his wife Sarah Pepper was 1760.

I can't seem to find a baptism for Jarvis around 1761, and wondered if the rootschat community would help me out.
Many thanks for any help given,
Holly

England / Family of FRANK ATHERTON don't appear to exist?
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 00:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm trying to help my great uncle find out more about his family (he's 86 this year) - he was only 11 years old when his father died. So I'm trying to find out as much as I can for him.

His father was called FRANK ATHERTON, and based on the marriage certificate, Frank married Christina Kingston. Frank was a farm labourer, born about 1906 (UPDATE: exact birth date is 31 Jan 1907, a location in Lancashire has been suggested by my great aunt Hilda), and is said to have a father also called FRANK ATHERTON, who was also a farm labourer.
I can't seem to find anything on Frank Atherton, and his father Frank. Frank (son of Frank) died in 1941 (and I've found the death index suggesting he was born in 1906 and died in 1941). I can't find the 1911 census (which would presumably have the two Frank's together), or a possible marriage for the parents.

It's making me wonder if Frank actually knew who his father was - could he have made up a father's name and occupation based on his own for the formalities of the certificate?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated - I really want to give my great uncle the gift of finding out who his family were - it's something he's always wanted to know but never managed to find out.
I'm hoping the lovely people of rootschat will help make a near-86 year old man very happy!

Kind regards,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Elizabeth Hammerton, b.abt 1798, Kimberworth
« on: Thursday 08 September 16 19:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I would really appreciate some help researching Elizabeth Hammerton. From censuses, I know she was born between 1797-1802 (around those years, as 1841 suggests 1802, and 1851 and 1861 suggest 1797 and 1798) in Kimberworth/Rotherham.
Elizabeth married Joseph Heaton in the Parish of Sheffield  on 9th February 1820. The marriage was witnessed by a Thomas Hammerton. I haven't seen the original record, so I don't know if any more details were on this record.
Elizabeth and Joseph had at least the following children; Hugh (b.1823), Susanna (b.1827), Ellen (b.1830), Mary Ann (b.1833) and Fanny Mary (b.1839).

I can't seem to find any baptisms for her in the Rotherham area - the closest I found was on FamilySearch, and was at Greasbrough bap 14 Jan 1798, daughter of John Hammerton and Susanna. I should mention that the first name on this record on FamilySearch was Betty instead of Elizabeth.

If anyone could offer their help on researching Elizabeth (finding her parents, grandparents, her siblings), I would be very grateful.

Best regards,
Holly

Hello,

This the most appropriate forum I could find - even though I cannot send the physical photographs to relatives, I have several photos from my Grandad's old album of his friend from his younger years that I would like to share with any relatives of his.

My Grandad's friend was called COLIN MAPPIN, and he lived in the Wortley area of Yorkshire. He was about the same age as my grandad - and indeed I found a birth registration for Colin in 1923 in Wortley.
My Grandad fought in WW2 in the Yorks and Lancs Regiment - Colin could well have fought too.

I do not know if Colin is still alive, so I'm reluctant to post photographs of him on the public forum, but if there are any relations out there, then I would love to share some photos with them - I never knew Colin, so I have many photographs of a man that I do not know.

Thank you,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / DWEKE - possible JEWISH origin? 1500's
« on: Tuesday 30 August 16 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've traced part of my father's line back to a marriage at Rotherham (how my family seem to love the place!) on 6th February 1559 - the marriage is between JOHN KENTE and JOAN DWEKE.
(I have only seen the index record for this on FamilySearch, so I haven't seen the image for this record - if it exists it could hold other information that I haven't found yet).

Having never heard of the name DWEKE before, I decided to look into it. The first result that came up was a page for the DWEK/DUWAYK/etc. name, suggesting it to be a Jewish name, particularly common in the Sephardic Jews. That led me to this on Wikipedia;
"After the expulsion, there was no Jewish community, apart from individuals who practiced Judaism secretly, until the rule of Oliver Cromwell. While Cromwell never officially readmitted Jews to Britain, a small colony of Sephardic Jews living in London was identified in 1656 and allowed to remain".
There was the Edict of Expulsion in 1290, supposedly expelling ALL Jews from England.

I'd really like to look into this further, as I'm presuming there weren't as many Jews in England in the 1500's as there possibly are today. That is, if the name is Jewish. Could it be a misspelling of a more common name, like Duke?
And any way to trace Joan would be really appreciated - I haven't been able to locate a baptism record (or any other record) for her yet apart from the marriage record.

Many thanks for any help you can offer - a Jewish link would really make an exciting discovery!
