World War One / help with gt grandfathers war records and which war diary please
« on: Sunday 23 March 14 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,im no good at war records etc and  im wondering if anyone could help me in working out my gt grandfathers movements and why different regiments?

here is what i have:
James Humphries b 1882 (he does say 1885 on most docs) i have his pension records it says RAMC 15847 reg no. served from 1901 - 1913
i also have his service records it says his regiment no is, North Staffordshire Regiment 2672 Private. North Staffordshire Regiment 240538 Private.  1914- 1920

now on his pension records it says promoted on 2 occasions i believe to corpral. in 1916

i also have his medal card showing the 3 medals , there is also a mention on the pension records of a couple more, but im struggling to read the image. what were the medals so i can look them up ?

so here is what im after, could anyone join the RAMC? Ive googled the RAMC and see its specific medical service, in  his census, marriage and any other he is just a labourer /iron turner.
never mentioned anything to do with army, my gt uncle who passed away not long ago, his son, said he thought he was just in the normal ww1 service. this obviously shows he had it as a career?

he also had never seen any medals or other war related stuff that he could remember, and as he also spent many years in the forces and would know /remember any of it, so he said?

why was he discharged in 1913 only to rejoin under the staffordshire regiment 12 months later in 1914?
also why does he have 2 numbers in ww1

and i would really like to get a full picture of him and wanting to see the war diaries for the battalion he was with but which one would it be? NA have 1st and 8th 2 of each record and is there will there be any more records about him or his regiments etc

i do know this is my gt grandfather as the address on the war records match his timeline and also the address on his marriage to my gt grandmother and some letters my gt uncle has etc.

any help would be greatly appriciated

World War One / help with pte Charles Edwin Peaker please
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, i know my gt uncle reg number 23914 was in 10th battlion West Yorks own regiment,
i dont think he is on any memorial, i have seen the one in Leeds Parish Church dedicated to the men of the 10th battalion in WW1, but no names appear, and have searched several sites.
The British newspapers i have found his obit from his grandmother and a neighbour.

but my uncle who passed me the war diaries for the battalion for the days leading upton his death, did say he saw a photo of Charles commemorated on some WW1 thing, but cannot remember where it was, he said this was a fair few years ago.

im hoping to research as much as possible on him and wondered if anyone has anything else i could try,

someone did mention that the London Gazette may have something on him as he was KIA, but i dont know if im looking at wrong thing, but nothing is coming up there?

I know the lives of first world war are putting pictures online on flicker, but did every soilider have there photo taken?

any help greatly appriciated

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Which Richard England in Leeds is which??
« on: Sunday 29 September 13 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have Thomas England born 28 Aug 1670 Leeds to Richard England. lived in Quarry Hill.
as i try to go back, i have found a Richard England b 24 Jan 1635 in Leeds to Richard who resides in Wortley Leeds.
now Richard father of Thomas there is a marriage for him to Helen Picket (transcribed wrong on anc* Jacob Ireland) now Richard is of Quarry Hill, Helen is of Wortley. 2 Feb 1666. which fits.

so Richard England who has child Richard in 1635, im thinking may be born about 1600 ish. he married Isabell Hardcastle in 1625 and states he from Armley and Isabell from Beeston. they are other children born also Gregory b 1631 cant decipher place name, Grace b1632 i presume Holbeck, And Mary b 1639 also of Holbeck. as well as Richard 1635.

now there is also a burial in 21 June 1686 Leeds St Peter just saying Richard Ingland of Quarry Hill - i think this maybe the Richard England/Ingland born 1600 circ. father to Richard b1635.
there is another burial for Richard England in 1665 that says Richard son of Richard of Quarry Hill. now could this be a child born to Richard 1635 who married 1666, and they had the son born before marriage, or could this be Richard who was born 1635 and then not my Richard who married 1666??

i seem to be going round in circles with Richard Englands,
any help greatly appriciated

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Parents of Robert Holdroyd born ab1762
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 21:39 BST (UK)  »
hi all, im trying to find the correct parents and work backwards on Robert Holdroyd here is what i have.

Rebecca Holdroyd b 1799 Crigglestone, married William Peaker , my 3x gt grandparents. Rebecca baptism 1799 at Wakefield West Gate Presbyterian to Robert and Sarah Holdroyd.
on her marriage to William it doesnt state father, and Rebecca dies in 1831 Sandal Magna.

There is another baptism for Esau Holdroyd Criggleston to Robert and Sarah, in 1791. on his second marriage to Jane Jagger Esau states his father is Robert Holdroyd a Gent.

I have Robert death in 1839 in Sandal Magna giving his birth year as 1762.

ive tried to locate a baptism for him and it only comes up with a Jerimah Holdroyd Shalloon Maker of Rippondon - now i have tried to trace this line back and i doubt this is mine, as Jerimiah Holdroyd son Robert married Mary Rushworth, and his birth is about 1757. i know it isnt big difference , but i have found a marriage in 1788 at Bradford parish to Sally Airedale, i do know Sally and Sarah can be the same name, i have this elsewhere. on the Bann for Sally Airedale it says that Robert is a Woolcomber.

i have also found a Peter as the father in Rippondon in 1765..

Evening all, im going round the bend trying to find My gt grandmother Lilly Peaker nee Morton.

Lilly born 1872 to Charles and Emma Morton, married James Arthur Peaker in 1893, Christ Church Leeds, they had numerous children from 1893 to 1906, just after this in 1908 we find that Lilly has left the family home and is unknown, upto the 1937 Electrol register in Leeds and her death in Leeds in 1941.

we have from her daughters barnardo file that Lilly apparently took up with a "Mr Boatman" after leaving the family home in Sept 1909 moving to 6 Fleece Lane, Medow Lane, then on  8th May 1913 they have left this place and went to Manchester with out daughter Minnie (Minnie went with her mum in 1909, but i have her marriage and her after 1913) - this info came from a long established friend from childhood of Lilly that lived at 6 Fleece Court. unfortunatly no name is supplied.

in the 1937 census Lilly is residing at 41 Black Bull Street, which had been her mothers home from 1901, her mother died in 1918 but appears on the 1923 electrol register, and sources from Leeds Library tell me it can be upto 5 years out as it took 5 years to complete. - but no Lilly Peaker on the 1923 electrol roll.

any help is greatly appreciated

Hi all, Sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place,

I have this family wedding photo, now im trying to find out which one is my gt grandfather and if any his sister. here are the people i know in the pic.

The Bride and groom aged 20 and 24, to the right of the bride , the man is her brother aged 18/19. the gentleman behind her brother is her maternal uncle who was the minister who conducted the wedding aged 44 , the man right of him is the brides father who was 48, then his wife sat down under him the brides mother, the ministers sister, aged 47. now to the far left are the grooms parents aged 49 and 50.

im hoping that the two men behind the groom one of them will be my gt grandfather he would have been 34 at the time and there sister would have been 44.

according to the info we have been given by the brides grandaughter she says that my gt grandfather is listed as Sarah's uncle James and it also just says sister, but no name. but the groom had a few sisters aged 25, 21 and 20.

now the 2 young girls bridesmaids, could be my gt grandfathers daughter, and also could be his sisters daughter, none of the grooms had children till after the wedding.

any help greatly appriciated i didnt know if the ages would be relevent, but thought to add them

Kind regards

Hi all, Im trying to find Harriett Darling nee Taylor but to no avail here is what i have

in 1826 Leeds parish church Harriett marries John Darling, John born 14 oct 1803

in 1828 They have a son called William Darling baptised 23 March although this shows parents John and Alice Darling

in 1830 They have a daughter Sarah Darling baptised 25 July parents John and Harriett, now john doesnt appear on census till 1861 as he is at sea, he is a master mariner along line in the family,

the 61 census he is living in Keighley as a Watchman for his sons firm, listed as Widow.

John dies in 1865 at Camp Field buried in Leeds General Cemetary with other members of the family

there daughter dies 1854 in Camp Field, on burial register it says her parents are John and Harriett. her step gt grandfather is the informant

she appears on the 41 census with an unknown Christopher Shillitto in Darlings Yard, which the same family owned her aunt and cousin lives same yard further down page,

in 51 census Sarah is living in Stone Row another one of there properties with her grandmother and step gt grandfather.

William Darling there son in 1841 census is living with the step gt grandfather again at stone row,

in 51 census he is lodging at a residence with his fellow buisness partner Robert Sellers as a mechanic.

Now could Alice be Harriett as in Harriet Alice, or could this be a typo on William Baptism?. i also cannot find a death for her at all,

the Alice Darling that is buried in Castleford All saints is John Darlings sister in Law, who died 1836

you see all these Darlings were master mariners and lived in Castleford and Leeds, they owned Stone Row, Camp Fields Leeds and Darlings yard Castleford.
