Yorkshire (West Riding) / Copley's at Ecclesfield, 1700's
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm currently tracing the parentage and siblings of John Copley (bap 1788 at Ecclesfield, son of George  Copley of Butterthwaite).
I believe John had the following siblings- all children of George Copley;

- Sarah, bap 1778, Ecclesfield
- Stephen, bap 1781, "
- Alice, bap 1786, "
- Michael, bap 1789, "
- Samuel, bap 1796, "
- Arabella, bap 1800, "
- George, bap 1802, "
- Joseph, bap 1808, "

There are some slightly bigger gaps than others between the baptisms, so there could be some missing children.

So then I went on to finding out about George Copley - who he married, who his parents were, and who his siblings were.
I found a marriage for a George Copley to an Alice Hattersley at Ecclesfield's St Mary (both of the parish at the time of marriage, a bachelor and spinster) on 09 Dec 1771. Again, there is a gap of 7 years between the marriage and the first child's (that I have found so far) birth.
I also found a possible baptism of George Copley at Wentworth - his father is named George, and is from 'Barley Hole' (which I think nowadays is Barley Hall) - on 24 Aug 1755. Saying that, there is also a baptism further away - at Darton, on 21 Jun 1761 with a father named John, a labourer - but this date would be too late for the 1771 marriage to Alice at Ecclesfield.

I'd like to be able to trace the Copley line further back, but I think I have some gaps to fill first. I would really appreciate help with this - any help you can offer would be great.  :)

Thank you,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Would really appreciate help with SETH WILD, 1600s
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

First of all, despite hearing the name Seth before, it's the first instance in my family. I don't believe it's that common (especially in the time frame I'm looking at) so I think it might have been spelled many different ways - hence why it's been hard to trace.

I have a Sarah Wild, baptized 25 Sep 1664 in Rotherham, daughter of SETH WILD. I couldn't find any other children of Seth in the local area, but then found a death for Seth in Rotherham in June 1666.

The only marriage I could find for him in Yorkshire was at Ecclesfield to Mary Badger on 21st August 1652 - which would leave a space between 1652-1666 for other children. I should say that the name Seth on this marriage was 'Seith'.

I also couldn't find any possible baptisms for him in the area. There seems to be so little about him!

Help tracing Seth would be a massive help - I'd really appreciate it.

Here's a baptism record for Joseph Flint, son of 'Johannes' (John) Flint, baptized at Rotherham in 1718 (26th March).
The father is of Masbrough - but what is his occupation? I initially read it as fidler?

Document clipping is attached- the second one on the 26th.

Thank you for any help,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Finding out about Mary Bottomley - 1700's
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 13:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have Joseph ADAMS marrying Mary BOTTOMLEY at Rotherham on 26 Dec 1793. Joseph Adams was from Thrybergh, born 1771.

I'm having more of a problem tracing Mary Bottomley. The marriage record didn't say where she was living at the time, or whether she was a widow. I have tried looking for previous marriages; especially since it seems that Mary and Joseph only had 3 children that I've found so far - John, Joseph and Margaret, born between 1797 and 1802 - which clearly leaves a gap of 4 years between marriage and the first child's birth - which suggests there could be more that I haven't found. These three children were baptized at Thrybergh.
There is a marriage of a Mary Stephenson to a William Bottomley at Ecclesfield on 29 Oct 1792, but there isn't a death or burial record for William Bottomley between 1792 and 1793.

I did find a baptism for a Mary Bottomley, but it was on 6th Oct 1761 at Conisbrough (daughter of John Bottomley)- which means she was 32 when she married, which (even though it is possible) is quite late for a spinster (I did expect her to be more likely in her 20's).

Where do I go from here? Can anyone else find any baptisms for Mary Bottomley's closer to the marriage date in 1793? Or perhaps even marriages to suggest that she was a widow when she married Joseph Adams.

Thank you for any help you can offer  :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Johnson, Loveday, Wainwright, at Darfield, 1600's
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Would love some help as I'm a tad stuck.

While trying to find the parents of Joshua Johnson (bap 25 Jan 1673, Royston, son of John of Darleton), I found a number of possible siblings, see below;

- John, bap 17 Oct 1667, Royston, son of John of Burton
- Mary, bap 1 Jul 1675, Royston, dau of John of Darleton
- Margaret, bap 5 Feb 1676, Royston, dau of John of Monk Bretton
- Sarah, bap 9 Oct 1676, Royston, dau of John of Darleton
- Thomas, bap 14 Dec 1680, son of John of Burton
- Hannah, bap 20 Oct 1688, Royston, dau of John of 'Carleton'
- Anne, bap 07 May 1691, Royston, dau of John of 'Darle...'
- Thomas, bap 25 Feb 1692, son of John of Darleton

It seems clear that there are at least two John Johnson's in the area. And to back that up further, I've found two marriages, both at nearby Darfield;
1) John Johnson m. Olive Wainwright, Darfield, 10 Oct 1665
2) John Johnson m. Mary Loveday, Darfield, 31 Jan 1667

So now comes the issue of matching the children to the parents!
Since my Joshua is the son of a John Johnson from Darleton, I'm tempted to say that all the children baptized with father's of John from Darleton will probably be Joshua's siblings. Saying that, the last two (Anne and Thomas) are only just 9 months apart. Just to add, no father's occupations were on the baptisms.

Help with which children belong to which parents would be great - I realise that it might be quite a tough task, but that's why I'm asking the rootschat community for their help.  :)

Regards,
Holly

England / Does 'Darlston' refer to Darlaston in Staffordshire?
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 12:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have a baptism of Joshua(h) Johnson at Royston (near Barnsley) in Yorkshire, the son of John Johnson. The baptism took place on 25 Jan 1673. It says on the baptism image on FindMyPast that John is of 'Darlston'. My first thought was that this referred to Darlaston in Staffordshire (now in the West Midlands), but I have to bear in mind that Joshua married in Darfield and lived in Darton (quite near to Barnsley) all his life, and everyone from there down in the tree lived in Yorkshire - so if it does refer to Staffordshire then this would have been the point that they moved up to Yorkshire.

I've attached the image of the baptism anyway (with the baptisms before and after for letter comparing) in case I have misread it (afterall I'm not an expert on deciphering letters). I'm thinking that it is more likely to refer to somewhere in the local area (especially since there's another entry further up the page of an unrelated person from 'Darlston'), but so far I haven't found anything.

Many thanks for any help,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Can't seem to find a marriage for JAMES MOSSFORTH
« on: Monday 22 August 16 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'd really appreciate some help with find a marriage for James Mossforth (sometimes Mossford).
He was the father of the following children, all baptized at Worsbrough, Yorkshire.
- Deborah (bap 15 Aug 1673, Worsbrough)
- Elizabeth (bap 11 Feb 1675, ")
- Elizabeth (bap 12 Apr 1677, ")
- Thomas (bap 4 Dec 1679, ")
- Martha (bap 1 Sep 1682, ")
- John (bap 29 May 1685, ")
- James (bap 24 Jul 1690, ")

I can't seem to find a marriage for James, I'm guessing it'll be before 1673. I've had a look on FindMyPast and FamilySearch, with no luck there. Apart from one marriage in Nottinghamshire - to Elizabeth Astlin, but the date is 07 Apr 1657 - so if she was (let's say) 18 when she married, she'd have been touching 50 when she had her last child. I'm considering that the marriage might be outside the Worsbrough area though as there's not many Mossford/Mosforth's in the area.

Hoping that someone will be able to help me out - I'd be very grateful.

Holly

PS: And if anyone knows anything about the name Mossforth/Mossford I'd be very interested to hear about it  :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / COMPLETED - How is this even possible?
« on: Monday 22 August 16 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

After I found out the parents of one of my ancestors through a very detailed baptism, it gave the names of Henry Adams (farmer of Thurnscoe) and Mary Green (daughter of John Green, weaver of Thurnscoe).

After trying to find a marriage between Henry and Mary, the only one I could find was between Henry Adams and a 'Mary Shepherd' on 6th Feb 1731 at Darfield.
I figured that Mary must have been married before, and indeed I found a marriage between a Mary Green (the maiden name given on the baptism) and a Thomas Shepherd in 1726 in that area. So I then searched for a death of Thomas Shepherd, and sure enough, I found one in 1731, BUT the burial took place 5 May 1731 at Darfield.

As you've probably noticed, this is AFTER the marriage of Mary to Henry Adams - so I'm figuring that I've gone wrong somewhere - I think it' more likely that I've gone wrong rather than someone marrying someone else while still being married to them!

Any help you can offer would be great -
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Struggling to locate a baptism - Mary Sanderson, 1700's
« on: Monday 22 August 16 17:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Currently tracing an ancestor by the name of Joseph Adams. Luckily for me, one of his younger brothers (John Adams) had a very detailed baptism record, which not only named his parents, but also his grandparents and two great grandparents!
So I had a lot of names to work with, and began searching for the records to prove the baptism information to be correct.
Joseph and John's parents were James Adams (blacksmith of Thurnscoe) and Mary Sanderson (daughter of John Sanderson and Ann Johnson).

Mary Sanderson is whom I am struggling with - I know she married James Adams on 15th Jun 1762 in Worsbrough/Darfield, and I know her parents (John Sanderson and Ann Johnson) married on 26th Feb 1733 in Darton. Mary's father John was a labourer of 'Long Emsall' according to John Adam's baptism in 1778. So I'm thinking that Mary Sanderson's birth and baptism would be between 1733-1746 around the area of Darton/Darfield/Worsbrough, maybe Sheffield if it was at the Cathedral.
I did find two Mary Sanderson's baptized at Sheffield, but from the (slightly hard to read) image, it looks as if her father was cutler instead of a labourer.

Help with this would be greatly appreciated as always,
thank you,
Holly
