Armed Forces / Highland Militia
« on: Monday 05 September 11 00:14 BST (UK)  »
Were the 18th and 19thC militia in the Highlands more like the regular army or territorial army, i.e. would a militiaman have another profession simultaneously such as a miller or inn-keeper but be called up like modern territorials or would he purely be a professional soldier?

Canada Lookup Request / James Grant - Toronto
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 00:56 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for my G Grandfather's brother James Grant for the last 3 months and I have just found him on an immigration disembarkation form in 1925, ship Letitia, returning to Canada and he is now Canadian!

The details I had were born Grantown, Morayshire in 1953 to James Grant and Christina McIntosh.
1871 Census, still at home, "lawyer's clerk".
1881 Census, lodging in Edinburgh, "commercial clerk esparto grass", then nothing more.

The immigration form gives me the name, age 72, dob and place of birth above, plus:
Nationality - Canada, race - Scotch
In Canada since 1890  ( entry a bit confused )
occupation: insurance and literature
address: 16 Parkview Avenue, Toronto
wife, age 63 to follow.

I would love to know anything more anyone might be able to tell me about him, particularly the reference to literature under occupation, did he write?  That would be so exciting!

Moray (Elginshire) / Knockando burials
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 20:29 BST (UK)  »
I have come across a Libindx reference "KN26" for my 5xG grandparents' deaths in Knockando.  (William Miller and Elizabeth Cumming - children: John, Charles, Hugh and Margaret)  Does that mean that they are both in the same grave and that is the grave number?  If that is so and anyone has access to the inscritions from that churchyard I would be very grateful if they could let me know what it says.

Scotland / What happened to James Grant?
« on: Monday 29 August 11 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I am curious to know what happened to my Great Grandfather William's brother, James Grant.

Born 1853 Grantown Morayshire to James Grant 1812-1900 and Christina McIntosh 1816-1879.
1871 Census: age 18, lawyers' clerk (apprentice) still in Grantown
1881 Census: age 28, he and his brother William 25 are single and lodging at 11, Upper Grove Place, Edinburgh.  There are two other lodgers and the head of house is a William Sinclair, victualler, and his wife Ann both from Aberdeen.
James's profession is "commercial clerk, esparto grass" and William's "bank clerk".

And that is the last trace I have of James.

I know that James entered into correspondence with Charles Darwin in 1878 while in Grantown.  He sounds fascinating, unlike his miserable brother from whom I'm descended; and I would love to know what happened to him, what he did and where he ended up.

Scotland / Dealing with crime in the Highlands
« on: Sunday 21 August 11 09:33 BST (UK)  »
I am curious to know how a Highland rural area dealt with crime.  I assume that petty criminality was dealt with by the Kirk Sessions and community as a whole, but what happened if there was a serious crime, such as GBH, arson or murder.  I know that people ended up in court but how did they get there, what was the route that led to court, in the 18thC before a national police force?  And what about middling crime; was that variable depending on the community?

Scotland / School Records - Grantown

Does anyone know whether early-mid 19thC school records exist for Grantown (upon Spey) and, if so, where I could find them?

Scotland / Kirk Session Records
« on: Monday 15 August 11 12:29 BST (UK)  »
I have noticed that the NAS Kirk Session records come under various headings and was wondering if someone could tell me what each category covers.  Under NAS CH2/1509 I have:

Records of Knockando Kirk Session 1757-1979
/1.  Register of Baptisms and Marriages 1760-1794
/2.  Testament Book 1775
/3.  Register of Discipline 1783-1795
/4.  Kirk Session minutes 1806-1845
      and Population Detail 1811-1841

I am assuming the "Records of Knockando Kirk Sessions" is to do with the fabric of the church itself and the "Register of Baptisms and Marriages" is the OPRs, but what exactly is covered by the others and how detailed is the "Population Detail"

Moray (Elginshire) / "Recollections of a Speyside Parish"
« on: Monday 01 August 11 13:18 BST (UK)  »
I came across this book by James Thomson which you can read on-line.  Absolutely wonderful, evocative description of 1830s life on the Spey and required reading for anyone with relatives from Aberlour.  I put "recollections of a speyside parish download" into google and up it came.  Can't recommend it too highly.

Moray (Elginshire) / National Archives of Scotland - Virtual Volumes
« on: Friday 22 July 11 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where one can view "virtual volumes" held by the NAS?  I want to view the Kirk Session records for Knockando which are included in this format, category number CH2/1509, at the NAS; but am not going to be in Edinburgh again until next March.  Would the National Archives at Kew have access, or university libraries in England?  Clutching at straws here!
