Somerset / Somerset man drowned, likely at sea.
« on: Sunday 05 December 21 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for quite sometime about a missing family member. My grandmother some 50 years ago advised me that her mother's brother Charles had drowned.

Charles Higgins born 1863 Crewkerne.
Baptised 1866 Tatworth. Given the middle name of Paul.
1881 Living with parents and siblings at Tatworth.
Occ-Sols Clerk working for Tucker and Forward of Chard. Witnessed a will 16/7/1883.
The firm advertised 10/10/1885 for a junior clerk..
At Chalrles' older brother's inquest in May 1889 it mentioned a brother had come from America some 4-5 years earlier to lend him money. I believe that was Charles.
That is the total amount that I have discovered and would love to find out more. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks Mark

Somerset / Hoskins siblings of Castle Cary
« on: Monday 29 November 21 09:37 GMT (UK)  »
Silas and Mary Ann Hoskins had a number of children and I am finding it a challenge discovering details regarding them. I think the list below is complete, but there may be so early deaths that I have not discovered.

Thomas 1847-1914 is my direct ancestor and I have knowledge about him. However, I notice on the internet someone has given him a middle name of Hayman and I don't know where that came from.

Martha 1839 lost her after 1861 census. Did she marry. When did she die? Also who is the Jas Hoskins on the 1861 census with her. It seems to be a brother, but I can't find anything else about him.

Aaron E 1851-     (poss also called just Edward) did he marry. Poss died 1933.

Richard J 1853-1876

James W 1858-1880

Frances C 1857 surprisingly born in Bristol. I can find no logical reason. When did she die?

Hannah 1849-1903 marr William Kenn

Mary Jane 1841-1885

Amelia 1839-1925 marr Henry Hunt

Eliza Ann 1847 did she marry John Cleave in 1867 when/where did she die?

A big thank you for any help,  Mark

Somerset / Tatworth home of P.C. George Higgins
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
George Higgins brought uo his family in Tatworth. In 1886 he left the village after serving as a police constable for 21 years to take up in Curry Rivel. A 1871 census mentions they lived in Tatworth Street, Tatworth. In Oct 1880 there are a couple of newspaper reports that P.C. Higgins raised the alarm when Mr Denning's bakehouse next door caught on fire. Although his neighbour's bakehouse was destroYed the house was saved. Any help finding George's house (possibly a policehouse) would be much appreciated.

Somerset / How to trace a ancestor's house.
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor George Higgins (previous unrelated message sent) was a police constable who in the 1870/80's lived in Tatworth near Chard. He moved with the police to Curry Rivel in 1886 after 21 years at Tatworth. The 1871 census names him living in Tatworth Street in Tatworth and I would be interested to know if the house has survived and where it is. In Oct 1880 the Frome Times and also the Western Gazette reported that P.C. Higgins had raised the alarm when Mr Denning's bakehouse (which was next door) caught fire. The bakehouse was destroyed but the house was saved.

Dorset / George Foot and strays?
« on: Thursday 07 January 21 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
I thought I knew all I was going to know about my grandfather x 2 George Foot 1850-1923.
He was married 3 times and had 13 children with his first wife and a further 2 with his second and none with the 3rd whom he married when they were both old.

A few years ago a distant relation told me that he had been told that George had several stray children taking the number of children up to around 21. I had thought this was mischief making and unfounded.

As he was a woodman and gamekeeper on the Up Cerne estate and with his wives pregnant for long periods he would have have had opportunities to misbehave.

Today I had found a letter a relative had sent my father in 1991. He is no longer with us. He felt George 'had been a bit of a lad with the ladies'! After  the relative put story in a local paper about family history with photographs he had a visit from a complete stranger and her son. Her name was Holloway and her family were  farmers called Gould from around Minterne Magna area. For years a picture of George was on the walls of their family house despite there being no obvious connection.

I have found a Charles Gould who married Elizabeth Hall. They lived at Glanville Wootton and had a daughter Sarah (twin). She had children Gerald 1895, Frank 1898, Mabel 1900, Lionel 1897 and Jack 1902 all having the name Foot in their name and being born around the same time as George's proper family. Any help proving a connection would  be greatly appreciated.

Thank Mark

Frank Hawker born Glastonbury? 1863 died 1953 in Rochester, USA where he was living with his daughter Hilda and son in law Reginald Miles following the death of his wife in 1937. He returned once to Street for 6 months before taken back to the US by his daughter.
He and his wife had lived in West End, Street, Somerset and both worked for Clarks the shoe company.
The mystery I have is that I have photos that suggest there is a family connection. My efforts have drawn a blank and I would be interested to know of any family ties to Stacey, Hoskins, Fowles/Vowles, Pursey or Smarts. It may be simply that they were close neighbours of my family who also lived in West End, Street but photos of just their family would be unusual to keep for many decades.

It is a long shot but if anyone knows of a connection it would be lovely.
Thanks Mark

Warwickshire / Batchelor Stacey
« on: Saturday 02 January 21 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have always been puzzled when my mother told me that the lady in several family pictures was named Daisy lived in the Midlands and was a relation and possibly a cousin of Aldus Stacey born Street 1882. My family have lived in and around the Street area of Somerset and therefore I thought it unlikely that Daisy was related.
It appears that a Daisy H Stacey was born in Leamington around 1883, who married a Charles (Ernest?) Batchelor in 1915 and who I believe lived in Warwick. On a Christmas card I have an address from a Batchelor living in Birmingham and another card signed by Ada who I believe was Daisy's sister.
With a surname of Stacey it would appear to tie up but a search of the census gives Daisy's father as Albert born in Dorset around 1844. I can't find a connection but shoemaking was the main industry in Street. Any help would be great as it has been a puzzle. Thanks Mark
