US Completed Requests / George Craig Cullen Death (1958?)
« on: Friday 05 August 16 14:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down the death of George Craig Cullen - he was born 9th Jun 1884 in Glasgow, Scotland.  He married Lily Selina Russell in Glasgow in 1908.  I've only found one child for them; George Henry Cullen born in England in 1909.  The family emigrated to the USA; I haven't found George going out yet but it must've been in 1909/early 1910 as Lily and George travelled to join him in Yonkers, New York arriving on 21st Aug 1910.

I've found them on the 1920 and 1930 census and George on his own as a lodger in 1940. I have a possibility for son George still in Yonkers too.  I haven't been able to find Lily in 1940 though.  George and Lily got divorced in Dade county, Florida in 1941 and Lily died in Florida in 1979.  I have found George was still alive in 1958 as he travelled back to the UK for a visit arriving 1st Mar 1958.  I haven't found him returning but there is a tree online that states he died in Florida on 17th Dec 1958.  I can't find any evidence to back it up though.

Any help to track down what became of him would be great.

The Common Room / Allan BOGLE Mysteries
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 16:23 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to two men named Allan Bogle - a father and son.  The father was apparently born around 1817 in Glasgow, Scotland.  His parents may have been Allan Bogle and Agnes Lyon but I haven't been able to fully confirm that.  He married Ann McPherson in South Leith in 1847.  Ann and their first child Catherine are on the 1851 census without Allan and I have been unable to find him on that census at all.  I have found him in 1861 (name wrongly given as Alexander) and 1871 though.  He worked as a boilermaker.  Then in 1873 his wife Ann died in Glasgow - she was not listed as a widow on her death certificate so I presume he was still alive at that time.  His daughter Annie got married in 1875 and listed him as deceased then.  I have been unable to find any sign of his death in Scotland.

Secondly his son Allan Bogle was born 16 Jun 1858 in Partick.  I've found him on the 1861 and 1871 census - in 1871 he was in the Glasgow Reformatory Institution and Boy's House of Refuge as a Young Offender.  I can find no sign of him at all after 1871 in Scotland though.  As I can't find a death I'm hoping he perhaps emigrated but I haven't been able to find a passenger list or anything else to track him down.

If anyone can spot anything I may have missed I'd be grateful - thanks.

United States of America / Alice Ginn Clelland/Hugh Hamilton - New Jersey
« on: Tuesday 31 May 16 16:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for obituaries for Alice Ginn Clelland (born 1st Apr 1898 Hamilton, Scotland died May 1989 Kearny, New Jersey) and her husband Hugh Hamilton.  I'm also looking to find out where she was buried and when her husband Hugh died - he was born 2 Feb 1896 in Kirkintilloch, Scotland and made a life claim on social security on 1st Oct 1962 but I haven't been able to find his death date so far.  I presume he also died in Kearny though. Thanks for any help.

The Common Room / James McKeddie Mystery
« on: Wednesday 25 May 16 02:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information on a man named James Matthew McKeddie. According to the only two census returns I have for him he was born c1857 in Edinburgh, Scotland but I can find no birth to match him.  I also can't find him on the UK census in 1861, 1871, 1881 or 1891.  In 1885 he married Jessie McKellar in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Scotland and they had two children (Margaret Moyies McKeddie born 1886 in Bridgeton and named after Jessie's mother and Archibald Leitch McKellar McKeddie born 1888 in St Rollox, Glasgow).  His wife Jessie then died in 1889 and son Archibald is on the 1891 census as an "orphan" while Maggie is elsewhere as a 5-year-old "boarder".  I can't see any obvious family connection with the people they are staying with and there's no sign of their father James.

He re-married to a Jane Kennovin in 1891 in Old Monkland and they had at least 4 children (Neil in 1891, Jane in 1892, Mary Ann in 1894 and Agnes Jemima in 1899 all born in Coatbridge).  The first census I have the family on is the 1901 census - James, Jane, Archibald, Jane, Mary Ann and Agnes are together and Neil and Maggie are elsewhere living with Jane's sister.

James died in Glasgow in 1924 and his parents' names are given as John McKeddie (glass blower) and Mary Ann Dunn on his death certificate.  This is consistent with his marriage to Jessie in 1885 although Mary Ann's name was given as just Ann.  His occupation was given as "formerly regimental bandmaster" so I presume he was in the Army and this may explain some of his absences on the census but I can't find any information on this.

I can't find a marriage for or any other children registered to a John McKeddie and Mary Ann Dunn so they're currently a brick wall.  Several of James' children ended up out in Canada and his son Archibald went to visit an aunt named "Jessie Rae" in Newburgh, New York in 1919 but I've not been able to work out how she fits in yet either.  As I don't know which country I need to be looking in and can't find anything in Scotland for John and Mary Ann or James' early life I've put this in Common Room.  I'd be grateful for any help to work this out and take these lines further back.  Thanks.

United States of America / Edith CAMPBELL (nee RUSSELL) Keansburg, New Jersey
« on: Monday 21 March 16 19:22 GMT (UK)  »
Edith Russell was born 12 Oct 1900 in Strood, Kent, England and married Alexander Campbell in Manhattan on 28 Feb 1935.  I have found them on the 1940 census in the Bronx and there's a 1945 naturalisation record for Alexander.  From there I can find nothing more on him but I have found that Edith died on 29 Oct 1988 in Keansburg, Monmouth, New Jersey.  Can anyone help me find further information on her especially an obit?  I know it's not possible to get a copy of her death record since it's not been 40 years since her death so an obit's my only hope of further information to help me crack the Alexander mystery.  Thanks for any help.

Donegal / MITCHELLS and COLQUHOUNS of Raphoe Donegal
« on: Thursday 07 January 16 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find anything I can on my ancestors from the Raphoe area of Donegal who emigrated to Scotland in the late 1860s.  James Mitchell was married to Marjory McCarron/McKearn (on Irish records I've seen her name as McCarron and Scottish records it tends to be written as McKearn).  They must have married around or before 1836 as their son Joseph was born around that time (I have not found a birth record for him so his age is just going on Scottish records and might be unreliable).  I have found Catholic baptismal records for three of their children - Margaret in 1844, Isabella in 1847 and one I can't read in 1850.  These are in All Saints parish, diocese of Raphoe.

James and Marjory had two daughters who married two men named Colquhoun.  Mary Mitchell married James Colquhoun apparently in "Rye, Donegal" on 12th May 1862 (the bulk of their children's Scottish birth records state that date but one says 1861 and one says 1863 and a couple say St Johnston instead of "Rye").  I have been unable to find the marriage and would really love to.  I have the civil birth certificate for their son John Colquhoun who was born 28 Jan 1865 in Ardagh townland, Taughboyne.  I can't find his baptism.  James Colquhoun's parents were John Colquhoun and Margaret Walker - John must've died before 1850 as Margaret Walker re-married to a John Duffy (again I haven't found the marriage) and had several children with him in the 1850s.

Mary's sister Roseann Mitchell married a John Colquhoun after the families moved to Scotland - they married in Hamilton in 1867.  I have this record and it tells me John's parents were William Colquhoun and Rebecca Ralston.  His death, however, states his mother was Margaret Ralston.  I've also found a Joseph Colquhoun son of William and Elizabeth Ralston marrying in Hamilton in 1873 - he surely has to be John's brother but again the mother's first name is different.  It would be great to find some proof of who she really was.

I suspect Mary's husband James and Roseann's husband John were cousins with their fathers John and William being brothers - James registered John's death and listed himself as brother-in-law which was correct but he could also have been his cousin.  Can anyone help me prove it?

Thanks for any help with this!

United States of America / James KELLY and Ellen/Eleanor KATERSON - Philadelphia, PA
« on: Thursday 31 December 15 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the deaths of James Kelly and his wife Eleanor "Ellen" Katerson probably in Upper Darby, PA.  They emigrated from Ireland to Philadelphia arriving on 11 May 1860 on the Zered with their children Thomas, Rose Ann, James, Bridget, Hugh J, Sarah Jane and Francis.  They had at least two more children in PA - Charles D Kelly born c1862 and Mary Ellen Kelly born c1864.  On the passenger list James' age is given as 45 and Ellen's as 35.

By the time of the 1870 census there is no sign of James; Ellen and the children are living in Upper Darby, Delaware County.  I presume James died between 1863 and 1870 but I haven't been able to pinpoint his death.  Ellen is also listed on the 1880 census still in Upper Darby but I can't find anything on her after that other than the listing of her name on death records of her children.

Any help gratefully received - I'm trying to find out who their parents were and track them back to Ireland (never easy!)
