Australia / Frankston Teachers College, Victoria
« on: Saturday 29 May 10 10:43 BST (UK)  »
We are seeking contact with any ex students of Frankston Teachers College who attended in 1960/1961. If you know of anyone in your family who was at FTC in those years, we want them to know that we are having a 50th Reunion in November this year.
Unfortunately, time and natural dispersal has meant we have lost touch over the years, and in those days every married lady adopted her husband's name, which makes it even more difficult to locate everyone.
Of the original 135, we have located just over half. We even have 4 of our orignal lecturers joining us. So if you, or someone in your family, were one of us, please contact me and I'll send you the details.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / where is this please?
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Last year I visited England on a 'family hunt' and in the process did some more sightseeing. Unfortunately my reliance on memory came very unstuck and I am left with this magnificent building with no home folder.
It is definitely London, possibly Kew Gardens or somewhere in Richmond, but then maybe not!
Can someone please help me sort  it out?
Maturational deterioration is definitely setting in and I really must make more exact notes in future.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Whitgift House - completed
« on: Wednesday 20 January 10 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a building which was used as some sort of billet by members of the Fire Service during WW2. I had believed it was called Whitfiled House. This proved to be not the case, but that a Whitgift House was a possibility.
I have just had a suggestion from Minet Library Records, that there was a Whitgift House, Whitgift St, Kennington, SE11. It was immediately behind the fire brigade headquarters, which was on the Albert Embankment. According to the London County Council maps of bomb damage, it was was undamaged by enemy action.
I have checked with the Fire Service Museum, the library records and lastly from the Lambeth Archives. There was indeed some close collaboration between the London Fire Service and local councils during WWII. They  have a file of correspondence. Unfortunately it only contains fairly high level correspondence between the Fire service and the council about policies, emergency procedures etc. and doesn't include any detail about individuals or indeed about Whitgift House.
So, having exhausted all the places I can think of checking, I'm hoping that someone may have some knowledge of Whitgift House being used as accomodation by members of the AFS/LFS.

Armed Forces / Any uniform ideas are very welcome.
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
It was suggested that I post this in this forum by the photography people. They have also pointed out that my copy of an original, is actually reversed.

I would really like to know what this uniform could be. It could have an association with Nassau (later Germany), or could be British if after the end of C19th or early C20th. Or both these could be wrong!!!

Hope someone can help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / When and what?
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
We are trying to identify this chap. It would help if we knew when and what the uniform is. The only clue is that if it is around the 1900's it could be one person, if it actually in WW1 it could be another. The only clue is the uniform.
Can anyone help identify it please?

London and Middlesex / seeking family of Mr Fawns 169 Wimbledon Park Road SW18
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 04:42 BST (UK)  »
My Dad was involved in the wartime rescue of a Mr Fawns, and another person, who had been trapped in the rubble of a bombed house at 60 Granville Road, Wandsworth on the night of September 9th 1940, for which he was awarded the George Medal.
I wonder if there are any descendants of this Mr Fawns reading this forum. I would love to hear from them.
Mr Fawns home address was recorded as 169 Wimbledon Park Road SW 18. Unfortunately I do not have any initial.
I recently visited the National Archives and was able to get a copy of the original documentation re this event.
I know it is a bit of a long shot, but strange things can happen....
Cheers

Australia / Australian War Graves pics
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 07:36 BST (UK)  »
I have recently returned from England where I did my share of cemetery searching. I was surprised to find a group of Australian War Graves and one other Australian Gravesite in a Commonwealth Grave Section of the Nunhead Cemetery. Nunhead Cemetery is in Southwark. It is perhaps the least known, but the most attractive, of the seven Victorian cemeteries on the outskirts of London.
I took photos of all 22 graves and will send a relevant pic to anyone who thinks that may have a family member buried there. It gives rank name and date of death of the following soldiers:
E L Lowe
H W Saur
A Callen
C G Longworth
C H Bock
C Munday
G W Wilson
Harold Leslie Skinner
J A Loxton
J H Lawn
J H Morgan
Leslie George Frew
P Jackson
R Fiddes
R L White
S H White
T E Herford
Walter Beecher Miller
L  L M Thompson
L R T Gilbert
V R Coombe
G H Bright
I hope this will be useful to someone.

I wonder if any local folk can help with this blurred Blue Plaque on the wall of a house in Lower Road Rotherhithe.
I would like to know what number house in Lower Road and what is on the plaque. I have looked up the Blue Plaque list, but the only one I can find  in Rotherhithe, is for the site of the first bomb at th e Surrey Commercial Docks, and these buildings seem to have been there since before that time.
The picture was taken out of a bus window and isn't very clear, but I hoping the blue plaque will give me a clue to the place.
Thanks
