The Common Room / The Old Wesleyan Chapel Elkins Hill Brixham
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the church with the spire which was built on Elkins Hill Brixham sometime in the 1800's please? This imposing building can be seen in many old photographs of the time but there is absolutely no mention of it anywhere except in some property adverts which says "missing". Apparently this chapel was never consecrated which begs the question why? Who went to the trouble of building this imposing church only for it to be used as a store/workshop by Mr Bubeer in the early 1900's after which it was presumably demolished to make way for new buildings. The church spire was used by the fishermen coming in from sea as a landmark but there is absolutely no mention anywhere - it's as though it never existed. There is a feeling that something dark happened there which is interesting because my family history documents one of my ancestors as coming face to face with the devil on Sheepy Lane Hill (St. Peters Hill) which is just below this site in the 1800's with the most appalling stench. There has to be something somewhere.

Carlow / Tomney/Walsh/Tallon
« on: Friday 22 March 13 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to pin my ancestors down to a parish and have found a John Tomney/John Walsh/Anastasia Walsh and John Tallon in the Griffiths valuation for Carlow. Coincidence? John Tomney married Mary Walsh daughter of John Walsh and Anastasia Walsh (nee Tallon). John Walsh was a farmer.

Lancashire / 1852 @ 1854 Births in Manchester
« on: Monday 28 February 11 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there!
I would like to trace the baptism records of Margaret Tomney born 1852 at John Street, Turner Street, Manchester and William Tomney born 1854 at John Street, Turner Street, Manchester. It is quite likely that their younger brother, Edward Stephen Tomney born 1850 on Spike Island, Cork, Ireland was baptised at the same place. Their parents are John Tomney and Mary Walsh.
The family came to England from Ireland about 1851 and were living at 6 Portugal Street, St. George, Manchester in the 1851 census, their religion I believe was Roman Catholic so I am hoping that someone may know which Roman Catholic Church would be the most likely one for the baptisms to be carried out.
Many thanks,
Jean.

Cork / St. Marys Roman Catholic Parish, Boherbue, County Cork.
« on: Monday 07 February 11 11:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there!
I wonder if there is a link to research the records at St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Boherbue, County Cork.
Having all but given up on researching my Irish ancestors I have come across a Mary Walsh and a John Twomey in that parish and although the surname I have for John is "Tomney" I thought it near enough to have a look at it.
My Mary Walsh was born abt 1817 and John abt 1821.
If I can find that a Mary Walsh and a John Twomey (Tomney) married in that parish then I am home and dry, at least that is my hope.
They were definitely Roman Catholic and had three children - Mary born 1836, Elizabeth born 1840 and John born 1848 when my great grandfather Edward Stephen was born 1849 on Spike Island , County Cork. (The whole family were on Spike in John's business capacity of clothiers broker, but moved to England by the 1851 census which just gives Ireland as their place of birth except for Edward Stephen who I know was born on Spike Island.)
I have tried before to nail them down to a parish and this is the closest I have got so if anyone can help I would be most grateful,
Jean.

FH Documents and Artefacts / 1901 Book of Common Prayer and Hymns
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
I inherited a 1901 Book of Common Prayer and Hymns that was published especially for the funeral of Queen Victoria. It is the loveliest thing to hold as the Moroccan leather cover is so soft and the royal cipher on the front is surrounded by a silver laurel wreath. The pages inside the cover are the most beautiful vibrant purple edged with gold. The pages are edged with gold when viewed straight on or to the right but when turned to the left they become purple. The inscription inside reads In Memoriam Victoria Queen & Empress 1837 - 1901 followed by a photograph of her and the full funeral service.
I have found one such item on an antique site which is identical in all aspects apart from the condition, this was a limited edition in pristine condition with it's original cases, but I can find no reference whatsoever to this item anywhere else - does anyone else have one and if so what is it's history?
My great grandfather, Edward Stephen Tomney, was Yeoman of the Guard to three monarchs, Victoria, Edward V11 and George V from 1899 to his death in 1933 so I am wondering if this particular edition was supplied to the royal household at the time of Victoria's funeral as a kind of keepsake.
I would love to know if anyone else has one.

Carlow / Anastasia Walsh (nee Talon)
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone please tell me how I may access Roman Catholic Parish B.M.D. records for the parish of Tullowphelim ( Townland - Downings) in the Barony of Rathvilly, Carlow?

I have just come across an Anastasia Walsh in the Griffiths valuation 1852 and am hoping against hope that she is the wife/widow of John Walsh (Farmer) who are my 3xgreat grandparents.

Anastasia Walsh is the occupier and a Stephen Walsh is the Lessor.

Also, at the same time there is mentioned a John Tomney at Tankardstown.

As John and Anastasia Walsh's daughter Mary born 1817 married a John Tomney born 1821 (my 2xgreat grandparents) I am hoping that finding the Walsh and Tomney family names together in the same County is a good omen.

The Tomney name is so very rare that I am hopeful,

Many thanks,

                     Jean

Renfrewshire / John Tomney born 1848 Ireland
« on: Friday 09 July 10 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi there!

Can anyone help me to solve the riddle of what happened to John Tomney born 1848 in Ireland.
In the 1881 Scottish census when his birth date is stated as abt 1853, he was living at 8 Guildry Court, Glasgow Bridgegate, occupation Clothiers salesman but after this I can find no record of him.
I believe that he probably died somewhere between 1881 and 1885 when his father died as there is no mention of him in his fathers will even though he was an older son and everything was left to the youngest son William.
I have searched for him on Scotlands people and also on the Inverclyde BMD's but to no avail.
I would love to track down his death certificate to know what became of him so any help would be most welcome.

Any clue as to where I may start my search would be most welcome.

Renfrewshire / Death of Mary Tomney born 1817 in Ireland
« on: Thursday 01 July 10 16:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi there!
I have found my Irish great great grandparents John and Mary Tomney on the Scottish census. In 1861 they were living at 115 Saltmarket, Glasgow St Andrews, Lanarkshire (name mis-spelt Tomny) and in 1871 they were living at 17 Moss Street, Paisley Middle Church, Renfrewshire. But somewhere between 1871 and 1881 when the family were living at 36 Shaw Street, Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire (name now mis-spelt Tommey) Mary must have died. I have tried Scotlands people but I cannot find any record of her death. Can anyone help please?
Jean.
